1. Introduction The evolution of humankind is associated with the use of materials and tools to such an extent that the phases of human civilization are named after the engineering materials of the age. Part of the reason for this is that materials define the operating limit of key engineering components. A prime example is the material chosen for the nuclear fuel element cladding in a nuclear reactor, which largely determines the operating conditions.
