Abstract The non-coding regions of some vertebrate mitochondrial genomes contain tandem repeat elements, whose copy number can vary between species, populations and even individuals. Both short (~20 bp) and long (130-160 bp) tandem repeats of variable lengths are present in the mitochondrial genomes of hares, rabbits and pika (Lagomorpha), while none can be found in related mammalian orders.
