Global warming is changing Canada's boreal forest and tundra
Global warming is affecting the boreal forest — what happens will depend on the climate, vegetation and the frequency and intensity of wildfires. Changes in the north include increases or decreases in leaf growth, called Arctic greening and browning, more extensive growth of shrubs and treeline movement. It is the interaction of fire, climate and time that determines the nature of the forest-tundra today and how it changes in response to climate variability.

A global database of Holocene paleotemperature records - Scientific Data
|
Abstract A comprehensive database of paleoclimate records is needed to place recent warming into the longer-term context of natural climate variability. We present a global compilation of quality-controlled, published, temperature-sensitive proxy records extending back 12,000 years through the Holocene.

A late Holocene pollen record from proglacial Oblong Tarn, Mount Kenya
High-elevation ecosystems, such as those on Mount Kenya are undergoing significant changes, with accelerated glacial ice losses over the twentieth century creating new space for alpine plants to establish. These ecosystems respond rapidly to climatic variability and within decades of glacial retreat, Afroalpine pioneering taxa stabilize barren land and facilitate soil development, promoting complex patches of alpine vegetation.
Running a cronjob with different parameters each day
I am a programmer, and do not know a lot about crons, but I want to know if this is possible. Lets say I have an array and a script which I run in NodeJS called . I want to run this script each day at 1 am. The command of this would be: Well now the tricky part, I want to rotate the options each day, so for example monday I want to run , the next day and so on. Also, I want to be able to add/remove options when needed, but the rotation should stay intact. Is this possible in any way?
When do honest people need privacy or anonymity? (e.g. they have nothing to hide)
I'm having a discussion with someone who thinks they don't need technical measures of privacy or anonymity. Common arguments against needing to care about privacy or anonymity include: My intent is to gather a finite list of occasions when either privacy or anonymity is needed for a typical end user in the UK or US. I will use these scenarios with the common actors, Alice, Bob and Mallory.
Double encryption with home brew algorithm
By itself, your home-brew algorithm is a form of security through obscurity. However, when applied in combination with a known good encryption, your home-brew algorithm may be considered a defense in depth strategy.
Is there a way to make a WEP-secured AP uncrackable?
There are two possible solutions here, the first might work, the second definitely works. If your router supports it, you can define a MAC address filter to either whitelist or blacklist devices accessing the accesspoint. To do this, you will have to log into the administration panel of your router and enable MAC address filtering. (Check your manual on how to do this). What kind of filter you can enable depends on your router.
How can you tell what a server actually does?
There are a few things you could do to try and ascertain what's running on your system. You can check which ports your server is listening on to get an idea of what's on there. A good command to use would be: As you can see from the example output above, it presents you with the protocol version (tcp or udp), the address that's being listened on, the port that's open and the program that's listening.
TCP/IP : Why is it good practice to compare checksums when downloading a file?
Please forgive me in advance if this question is very naive! If for example, we download an ISO from a website, often md5sums of the ISO are supplied so we be sure the ISO isn't corrupted. My question is why is this necessary? Surely the error correcting properties of TCP are sufficient,so that if a packet isn't received correctly it will be retransmitted? Doesn't the very nature of a TCP/IP connection guarantee data integrity?
Why is it good practice to compare checksums when downloading a file?
As has been noted by others, there are many possibilities for data corruption where any checksum at the transport layer cannot help, such as corruption happening already before the checksum is calculated at the sending side, a MITM intercepting and modifying the stream (data as well as checksums), corruption happening after validating the checksum at the receiving end, etc.
In which order do I plug the SATA power and data cables for hotplug?
In the SATA specification this is referred to as and and they are two separate events. While the electrical and communication layers support both hot plug and hot removal, check that your drive controller, operating system, and drivers support them. Note that all of the below ONLY applies to host and devices (ie, drive controllers and drives) that BOTH declare they are hot plug capable. If your drive controller has specific instructions, follow them. If not, read on.
Solving server room heat dispute
Over the years I have come across many rooms like this. Until you can put in a room A/C system.. even the wall mount units work wonderful with the condenser units mounted outside the building. Some things to consider.. As always heat rises.. Servers generate the most heat due to the shear number of fans in them.. Older servers spew out more then the newer ones.. (newer servers are also quieter due the fan control technology). However.. Anything that does not have a fan..
