Managing Outliers in Australian Surgical Clinical Quality Registries

1 Background Clinical quality registries (CQRs) systemically collect health-related information that can be used to monitor, evaluate and improve care [1-5]. In Australia, a number of CQRs are available to inform surgical practice [6]. As part of a quality improvement initiative, CQRs, working together with health service providers, identify inter-hospital variation that can be compared with established reference points or benchmarks and so identify outliers [4, 7-9].
