Periods of reduced feed intake are common in beef production systems. Newly weaned calves, transported cattle, newly received feedlot calves, heat–stressed animals and cattle battling disease often consume less feed than normal. In newly received feedlot cattle, dry matter intake may drop to 0.5 to 1.5 per cent of body weight during the first week after arrival before returning to about 2.5 per cent.
