Central to how we think of sustainability in forest management is the assumption that live trees can be removed without undermining the forest's future potential to regenerate as an ecosystem and as a home for rich biodiversity. Much of this thinking has been inferred from observations of biodiverse forests in naturally dynamic landscapes, and there is extensive literature on how timber harvesting resembles or differs from severe natural disturbances (e.g. Perera et al., 2004).
