The incident occurred when the animal encountered a pufferfish that had washed ashore. The dog ate the fish during a walk on the beach and died approximately 30 minutes later. The pet’s owner, Maria Kaloudioti, confirmed the tragic event in a social media post, identifying the dog as “Morena” and urging the public to exercise extreme caution when visiting beaches with pets.

The man found himself stranded in difficult and inaccessible mountainous terrain, prompting an extensive rescue operation involving specialised forces. Rescue teams from the 5th Special Disaster Response Unit (5th EMAK) and the Athamanio Fire Service mobilised immediately after receiving the alert. They navigated challenging alpine conditions to locate and reach the hiker.

The commander of the 79th Higher Military Command of Internal Defence Units, Brigadier General Emmanouil Touloupakis, and the commander of the 649th Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Anastasios Fourikis, received the President during his visit.
