Silicon Valley Has a Sustainability Complex
Architecture Silicon Valley has a Sustainability Complex By Alice Bucknell A drone lifts off from the Junipero Serra Freeway, closing in on a futuristic glass ring, lined with oak trees. Cutting through the building’s transparent façade – its inner workings splayed out like an infinite cross-section – it picks up the pace on a young woman as she races through the sprawling central garden.
A Call for Ancestral Futurism
Homes are mirrors of who we are – our taste – our likes and dislikes. They’re also the sacred HQ from which we build a shared politic with our fellow kinfolk and with our surroundings. Perhaps as an architectural designer, I'm biased, but in shaping new futures, domestic space is central – it matters what our houses look like and even more so, what we want them to look like. Like with nearly all Caribbean islands, in Jamaica, people are incredibly in touch with the environment.

Placing the Global South at the centre of this year’s Venice Architecture Biennale created a spirit of openness and sincerity, write Ewa Effiom, Krish Nathaniel and Aoi Phillips in this review of the event. There are enough Pritzker and Stirling prizes to recognise built work in our industry. For the 18th iteration of the Venice Architecture Biennale, architecture’s biggest festival of ideas, curator Lesley Lokko promotes the process of architecture to the same heights as its outputs.
UK Architecture is Greenwashing on a Global Scale
Over the past year I've been returning to my 'alma mater’, teaching on the Masters Architecture course at Central Saint Martins, London. Being back in Kings Cross (or NC1, to go by its recently minted postcode), I've been faced with the wall of construction that is the new Google campus. Longer than the Shard is tall, the building – dubbed the landscraper – snakes along a thin site wedged between railway lines and the grandly named King's Boulevard.
