1 INTRODUCTION Corneal diseases and insults may lead to corneal opacification and eventually cause blindness. Current treatment choices are minimal, owing to severe donor tissue paucity and the likelihood that a substantial number of patients suffering from adverse conditions show poor prognoses for corneal transplantation.1 In such cases, replacing the opacified cornea with an artificial equivalent to restore vision is the ultimate goal.
