For almost half a century, corticosteroids have been a cornerstone of induction therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) due to their efficacy and rapid onset of action. Since there are many side effects from corticosteroid use, particularly when used for prolonged periods, alternative induction strategies are needed to minimise exposure. Exclusive enteral nutrition (EEN) was developed in the 1970s and has been used as an alternative induction therapy in Crohn's disease.
