School’s out, and so are your required readings. Start your summer off with books you’ll actually want to read. May 6, 2025 Barrie Barto, Former Editor-in-Chief “The Rook” by Daniel O’Malley This has been my favorite book since middle school, and my paperback has a well-worn spine to prove it. O’Malley’s debut novel centers around Myfanwy (rhymes with Tiffany) Thomas, who wakes up with no memories, surrounded by dead bodies in a park; all she has is a note (from herself) in her pocket.

Before you graduate college, you have to take an anthropology course; this is non-negotiable. You might ask, “Anthropologie? Like the store? Why would I take a class about that?” And you would be close, except this anthropology ends in a “y” and involves a lot less shopping. Let me break it down for you. Anyone who has taken high school biology may already know the fact that “anthro” is a Greek-derived prefix meaning “human” and, of course, “-ology” means “study of”.

You may see people walking around with smudges of dirt on their foreheads on March 5 this year. While it’s possible they simply misjudged their eyeshadow placement or accidentally touched their forehead after furiously scribbling with a quill pen, they are more likely observing Ash Wednesday — the first day of Lent for many Christians.
