When It Comes to Racial Justice, Why Is It Wrong to Demand the “Impossible”?
Photo Credit: Peter Burka, CC BY-SA 2.0, via Wikimedia Commons On a recent episode of The Open Mind, Alexander Heffner asked his guest, activist minister and scholar Nyle Fort, about the connections between the Covid-19 pandemic and the reemergence of social justice protests across America. Referencing Arundhati Roy’s recent essay “The Pandemic is a Portal,” Fort meditated on the potential for remaking our world in more equitable ways, particularly in terms of racial justice.
Harvey Weinstein, Witches, and Consent
The Harvey Weinstein case, a flashpoint for the #MeToo movement, has finally come to court. On January 10, female protesters gathered outside the Manhattan courthouse, chanting “The rapist is you… patriarchy is a judge” in English and Spanish. Inside, the Hollywood producer’s lawyers argued that the demonstrations would unfairly bias the jurors, who were still being selected.
David Brooks & Economic Inequality
David Brooks has long championed the “great books” in his role as a public intellectual. To be sure, in an era in which some have dismissed this tradition as old-fashioned, outdated, irrelevant, or even dangerous to the politics of the moment, I want, as a scholar largely of these “great books,” to praise him for his frequent attention, in particular, to the wisdom to be found in the Ancient world of, for example, Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and .
For The Love Of God Can We Please Stop Talking About "Bernie Bros"?
This essay was originally published on January 15 2020 at Singal-Minded: you can subscribe here. If you are not on Twitter, then you may be blissfully unaware of the extent to which online bullshit has melted the brains of many professional journalists and pundits and activists, and seems to be seriously influencing their views of the 2020 presidential race. The so-called Bernie Bro meme is a great example of this.
Does academic freedom matter to conservative intellectuals?
Liberalism itself seems likely to generate demotic demands for an illiberal autocrat who promises to protect the people against the vagaries of liberalism itself. Liberals are right to fear this eventuality, but persist in a willful obliviousness of their own complicity in the birth of the illiberal progeny of the liberal order itself. It’s a dark time for liberals. The leaders of the world’s three most powerful countries—China’s Xi Jinping, Russia’s Vladimir Putin, and the U.S.’s own Donald J.
The Dilemma of Black Citizenship
This essay was originally published on August 23 2019. “I love America more than any other country in the world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” James Baldwin, Notes from a Native Son The concepts of universal equality and suffrage have historically provided the necessary openings for those who are not rich or white or male to lay claim to the mantle of American bounty and patriotism.
Alabama Feminists Fight Back
The first meme I saw when I logged on to social media on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 featured a picture of George Orwell, captioned with the words “Boy, did I call it or what?” Beneath it was a picture of Margaret Atwood retorting, “Hold my beer.” I then saw feminist and progressive friends from around the country and the world discussing the fact that the Alabama Senate had just passed HB 314, the most regressive abortion law in the United States.
How I Knew the #CovingtonBoys Video Was Clickbait
Everyone has a #CovingtonBoys story, and this is mine. It is a story about clickbait. It is a story about how an unknown political operative captured a real event that might never have been noticed at all, and turned it into a news tsunami during a federal government shutdown that has imperiled millions of Americans. And it is about why a powerful story about race in America makes it almost impossible to talk about how you got that story in the first place.
