Sharing his stories of the Northwest makes author feel more at home

AS A PARK RANGER at Arches National Park in Utah in my 20s, I was struck by how often visitors asked questions about the park’s flora, fauna and rocks. I wondered if they asked similar questions at home. I suspected they would discover that the answers were just as interesting, if not more so, than the answers I provided. This led me to encourage people to go home and seek out the natural and cultural history stories around them.
