Having immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) isn’t only about making sure your platelets are at a safe count. What many people don’t see is the invisible mental load of living with this rare disease. While ITP affects my physical health, it also does a number on my mental health. No matter how positive and uplifting I try to be, I feel a constant heaviness in my mind and heart. The mental struggle is real. When should I be concerned? What warrants a concern?

Dating in your 40s is an animal all its own. Add living with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) to the mix, and dating becomes that much harder. Will the person be understanding of my rare disease? Will they be compassionate when I’m managing medication side effects and hospital stays? Who would sign up for this? Who would want to date me when I have a health condition that affects my daily life? Sure, I have many excellent attributes; I’m a well-established young woman.
