Have you ever used a typewriter?

my first newsroom only had computers for the copy desk. reporters used typewriters. forced you to organize before writing.

How is social media changing news?

social media has both created news (the dress is white and gold) and revved up the news gathering process. that's both good and bad.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

it's an amazing opportunity and a sobering responsibility. you have to stay focused on the readers.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

dictionaries, livescribe pens (two) and excel

Why did you become a journalist?

i love to write and have the attention span of a toddler. novels are likely out of the question. i need to get paid on friday.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

focus on the stories. there will always be a market, even if the format changes.
