Misogyny is a form of contempt or hatred for women that can show up in both subtle and obvious ways. It can reinforce gender inequality, hurt mental health, and lead to violence. Challenging misogyny involves awareness, education, and actively calling out harmful behavior. Misogyny is a deeply rooted bias against women that enforces traditional gender roles and punishes women who challenge them. While it is often confused with sexism, misogyny is about more than discrimination.

What Is Inclusion?

Inclusion is the practice of including and accommodating people who often face discrimination and exclusion due to race, gender, ability, sexuality, or identity. In light of the current racial climate, many settings are becoming increasingly aware of their lack of diversity and representation. Such organizations have failed to represent people of all backgrounds, genders, etc. This has left the most oppressed folx feeling undervalued, ignored, erased, etc.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, having grown up in Trinidad, I attended St. Joseph's Convent, where we had to pass a typing class in high school.

Why did you become a journalist?

I got into journalism in an attempt to address the horror stories students shared in my work as a social worker, committed to anti-oppressive practice.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I am most proud of my forthcoming Asparagus Magazine story, given how long I have tried to bring much-needed attention to inequitable mental health care.
