What was your first job as a journalist?
Reporter at The Index, my college newspaper at Truman State University.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I tried writing a book when I was, oh, 9 years old, I think?
How is social media changing news?
It forces young people who might not normally have been interested in news to at least see it in their Twitter feed.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Learning about people and the world and packaging/distributing that information in a way that people want to consume.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Since I'm no longer a reporter, I prefer not to be pitched.
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook, although Instagram is becoming a close runner-up.
Why did you become a journalist?
I love learning about new people, their background, where they came from, how they got to where they are.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
There were some pretty great moments when I was reporting for Jon Yates' consumer-help column, "What's Your Problem?"
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
If you can think of a killer way for newspapers to make money online, you'll come out ahead. Get crackin'!
When's the best time to pitch you?
I prefer not to be pitched, as it doesn't really make sense in my current position.
