What was your first job as a journalist?
I was a writer for my local journal in high school, then a staff writer at my college's newspaper, and then the Deseret News' in-depth team.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I own a 1944 U.S. Air Force Underwood manual and a 1975 Smith-Corona manual.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
To hold those in power accountable, to share intimately human stories, to always tell the truth and share solutions, and promote democracy.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Datawrapper, Excel and SQL are staples.

Why did you become a journalist?
I am a born storyteller and crusader for truth, and I believe in justice.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was the Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook and periodically wrote for my city's journal.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Be assertive and kind at the same time. Trust yourself and believe in your work, despite comments or sometimes, editors.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
With my nose in a book, clacking on my vintage typewriters, hammocking, petting my cat, sewing, crafting or listening to vinyl.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That public lands don't impact people's everyday life. They do!
