1 Introduction The complex electronic structure of high-spin (hs) Co(II) facilitates its widespread use in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts [1-8], magnetic materials [9-11] and single-molecule magnets [12-17]. However, the complicated electronic structure that gives rise to easily detectable signals in a wide array of spectroscopies, simultaneously hampers the interpretation of spectroscopic signatures in terms of physical and electronic structure.
