Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Of course! I learned to type on one.

Why did you become a journalist?

It was the most obvious fit. I loved to write, read, and investigate, I love a challenge, and I have a wide range of interests.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I wrote, did layout, edited, and photographed for my newspaper and yearbook! I was editor for 3 years per publication.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My Agent Orange series with Pacific Daily News helped launch a Congressional investigation and committee.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read widely, read constantly. Learn to recognize lazy and bad journalism.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I enjoy The Atlantic and ProPublica's deep-dive work.
