Synthesizing scientific literature with retrieval-augmented language models
9 hours ago After a year of headlines claiming AI would replace millions of jobs, companies are quietly discovering something else instead. AI isn’t eliminating human work. It’s redistributing human judgment, away from routine tasks and into the narrow zones where ambiguity is high, mistakes are costly, and …
Synthesizing scientific literature with retrieval-augmented language models - Nature
|
Abstract Scientific progress depends on the ability of researchers to synthesize the growing body of literature. Can large language models (LLMs) assist scientists in this task? Here we introduce OpenScholar, a specialized retrieval-augmented language model (LM)1 that answers scientific queries by identifying relevant passages from 45 million open-access papers and synthesizing citation-backed responses.

Introducing TLDRs on Semantic Scholar
The TLDR feature from Semantic Scholar on the Author Page for the Researcher Isabel Cachola, author of TLDR: Extreme Summarization of Scientific Documents. TLDRs (Too Long; Didn’t Read) are super-short summaries of the main objective and results of a scientific paper, generated using expert background knowledge and the latest GPT-3 style NLP techniques. [1805.05238] Citation Count Analysis for Papers with Preprints
Abstract: We explore the degree to which papers prepublished on arXiv garner more citations, in an attempt to paint a sharper picture of fairness issues related to prepublishing. A paper's citation count is estimated using a negative-binomial generalized linear model (GLM) while observing a binary variable which indicates whether the paper has been prepublished.
