Thoughts on whatever the hell is going on with the Red Wings
What a torturous offseason it has been here in Red Wings land. Not sure what we fans did to deserve this! Okay, now that I have that off my chest, let’s get caught up on what the hell is going on. Steve Yzerman’s replacement has still yet to be named. So that means that Yzerman is still in fact running the ship, albeit during one of the deadest parts of the offseason in terms of transactions.
Yzerman to Transition from Red Wings GM to New Role
In an (somewhat) unexpected announcement Wednesday morning, the Red Wings announced that Steve Yzerman will be transitioning from his role as Executive Vice President and General Manager. Yzerman will continue to serve as a senior advisor to Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch. According to a statement from the team, The search for a new head of hockey operations is underway. Yzerman will remain in his current role until a successor is named.
Report: Larkin Has Not Expanded Trade List
There’s a new twist in the standoff between Dylan Larkin and Steve Yzerman. According to Helene St. James, Larkin’s camp has not expanded his paltry list of teams he wants to be traded to. The list remains three teams – Florida, Las Vegas, and Minnesota. This contradicts previous reporting that Larkin had expanded his list to Dallas. Yzerman has taken a hardline approach with Larkin’s trade request.
Red Wings acquire Keegan Kolesar from Vegas for futures
Steve Yzerman is using some future draft capital to add some grit to Detroit’s bottom six. According to Darren Dreger, the Red Wings are sending future draft picks to Vegas in exchange for forward Keegan Kolesar. Keegan Kolesar traded to Detroit for a 3rd in 2029 and a 7th in 2027. — Darren Dreger (@DarrenDreger) July 1, 2026 This is the type of player the Red Wings have needed to get for quite some time now.
2026 NHL Free Agency Tracker
The NHL’s free agency period opens today at noon, and Steve Yzerman has either a lot of work to do or little work to do. Just depends on what his vibe is I guess? This year’s class of free agents isn’t impressive. Very few players that would move the needle a lot, so any free agents signings by Detroit will be in the margins. Still not much on the Dylan Larkin front.
Red Wings Trade Cossa to Utah, Select JP Hurlbert at no. 23
Steve Yzerman has made his first significant offseason move, and it doesn’t involve Dylan Larkin. The team announced that they have traded goaltender Sebastian Cossa for the 23rd pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. 🔁 pic.twitter.com/ffptm8naCk — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) June 27, 2026 The Red Wings didn’t have a pick in the first round, so it’s nice to see them use an expendable asset to get back in after the Justin Faulk trade.
Report: Dylan Larkin has Requested a Trade out of Detroit
Elliotte Friedman is reporting that Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade: ”Larkin’s involvement in the trade market is massive. He has a full no-trade clause both this season and next, so his control over the situation does not change July 1. He’s a top-line centre in a league desperate for centres, so there’s going to be a ton of interest. His play at the 4 Nations and Olympics was stellar.
Detroit Lands PWHL Team
It’s official. The city of Detroit is getting a Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) team. According to the official announcement from the PWHL, the new team will begin play for the 2026-27 season. Home games will be hosted by Little Caesars Arena. Additionally, Detroit will host the 2026 PWHL Awards Ceremony, and the 2026 PWHL Draft. The Draft will take place at Fox Theatre.
Quick Hits: Are the Red Wings in a Culture Crisis?
Hopefully, your emotions (and eyes) have settled if you watched the entire game against Pittsburgh last night. What an absolute toilet show. The Detroit Red Wings continue to display their lack of killer instinct in must-win games. It’s almost like they’re fully content with letting March get the best of them. What the hell, guys? Do you even enjoy playing this wonderful sport? You’re staring at the longest streak of playoff-less seasons in the league, and you just…keep laying eggs? Shame.
Game Day Updates: Red Wings vs Sabres
Big game, must win, blahblahblah. I’m out of cliches, my tank is near empty, and I am simply asking for a win. The Red Wings don’t control their own destiny at this point, and they’re on the road in Buffalo tonight against a team that is, well, playing much better hockey this month. The Sabres are coming off of back-to-back losses (sounds familiar) and are likely going to be pissed off because of that.
Red Wings Activate David Perron from IR
The Detroit Red Wings are getting some much-needed help. The team announced before Saturday night’s game in Dallas that forward David Perron has been activated from injured reserve. He is active, and will play on the 2nd line with Marco Kasper and Lucas Raymond. UPDATE: The #RedWings have activated David Perron from injured reserve.
Red Wings Recall Trio from Grand Rapids
Here comes the calvalry… or something like that. The Red Wings are down bad, man. No other way to put it. Not only did they piss away a very important two points in an epic collapse against the Florida Panthers Tuesday night (90 seconds of absolute hell), the team is now down their top two centers. Both Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp are sidelined with lower-body injuries, and who the hell knows when either them will return this season, if at all.
Red Wings Acquire Justin Faulk
The Red Wings are bringing in some much-needed help on the backend at the 2025-2026 NHL Trade Deadline. Detroit is sending a 1st and 3rd round pick to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for veteran defenseman Justin Faulk. Justin Holl is also a part of the deal. Faulk, 33, has shown that he still has plenty of gas left in his tank. He’s got 32 points (11-21–32) in 61 games with St. Louis this season. He’ll be the second-highest scoring defenseman on the team when he puts on the Winged Wheel.
2025-2026 NHL Trade Deadline Thread
It’s officially NHL trade deadline day for the 2025-2026 season. There were a slew of trades late Thursday, including a move from the Red Wings. Steve Yzerman struck a deal with the Ottawa Senators to bring forward David Perron back to Detroit. Here is the NHL’s official Trade Tracker for your bookmarking needs. The prices that contending teams are paying for depth pretty much speak for themselves. What seemed like a buyer’s market earlier this week has been given a firm shove into a seller’s market.
Red Wings Acquire David Perron from Sens
On the eve of the NHL’s trade deadline, Steve Yzerman made his first move to bolster his team. David Perron, a familiar face, is returning to Detroit from Ottawa for a conditional draft pick. UPDATE: The #RedWings have acquired David Perron from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional fourth round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. pic.twitter.com/MS7X96BeHu — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) March 6, 2026 Perron suited up for the Red Wings in 158 games between 2022 and 2024.
Red Wings Give Ben Chiarot a Three-Year Extension
You will get three more years of Ben Chiarot, and you are gonna like it!!!! The Red Wings announced a somewhat unexpected contract extension Tuesday morning. Defenseman Ben Chiarot is staying put in Detroit after signing a three-year deal that carries a $3.85 million cap hit. The new deal expires in 2029, when Chiarot is 38 years old. BENNY! 🗣️ The #RedWings have signed Ben Chiarot to a three-year contract extension with an AAV of $3,850,000.
Quick Hits: Patrick Kane Gets 500th Goal in Detroit
It was a tough start to 2026 for the Red Wings due to back-to-back losses against Pittsburgh, but the vibes have been reversed after back-to-back wins against Ottawa and Vancouver, respectively. Okay, so Vancouver is not a good team and Ottawa is last in the Atlantic. You can only play who is on your schedule, and Detroit is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games. It’s January, so I’ll take it. Perhaps the biggest story of the day, at least for us, is Patrick Kane.
Quick Hits: Dynamic Defense Paying Dividends
Happy Simon Edvinsson Day in America to all who celebrate! No seriously, though. What a way to bounce back after Saturday’s ugly loss against the Hurricanes. The Toronto Maple Leafs gave the Red Wings a lot to handle on Sunday. The first period was a defensive battle before Matthew Knies opened the scoring in the middle frame. Moritz Seider would have the equalizer with less than a minute left in the second.
Quick Hits: The Cat’s Meow, Quinn Hughes, Burgers off the Menu
As I am writing this, the Red Wings have won all but two games in the month of December. In the same month last season, the Wings had lost five games to this point. That’s what we call progress, right? Detroit finally shook off the “Islanders demon” last night with a 3-2 win on home ice. Hooray! No season sweep! A lot of the focus is on Alex DeBrincat, and for good reason.
Quick Hits: Red Wings Goalies, Olympics, Mythical Beings, etc.
The Red Wings are a good team. First time I’ve been able to confidently say that in quite some time. Sure they’ve got some issues, but I think it’s fair to say this group should be a playoff team come April. The Wings have points in five straight games and are again punching down in the Atlantic Division standings. Detroit’s most-recent win was a brilliant 39-save shutout from John Gibson in Vancouver Monday night.
Quick Hits: The Thanksgiving Benchmark Edition
Happy almost Thanksgiving, Wingnuts! And to our friends in Canada, happy Wednesday. 🙂 Usually after a game like the Red Wings had against the Devils, I’d be a little pissed, because that was a winnable game. I’m not. That game was a moral victory for me, because the team showed some fight. The defense is still an issue, and will probably remain that way for the rest of the season barring any moves.
Quick Hits: How About Those Red-Hot Griffins?
Ugly game last night, eh? Never a nice thing to get shutout on home ice, especially to a team that has already given you a nice ass-whooping already this season. Yuck. Let’s address the “elephant in the room.” I wonder about John Gibson. It’s hard to judge a goalie when your team scores precisely zero goals in a game, but the cold-hard truth is that Gibson has been a disappointment so far this season. It’s early, but I can’t say the guy has inspired any confidence for me.
Quick Hits: Red Wings Rookies Rise to the Occasion
Howdy, partners. Cheers to the Atlantic Division leaders, eh? Big win for the Red Wings last night at home, led by Detroit’s top line and rookies. What more could you ask for? Nate Danielson picked up his first-career goal, and had a BEAUTY for his second-career goal called back due to an offsides challenge. Emmitt Finnie picked up the game-winning goal (assist to Danielson!), his firsts in quite a bit, and Dylan Larkin earned his 600th NHL point on an empty-net goal.
Weekly Roundup: Red Wings Successful in California
I’ll be honest with you guys, I didn’t catch much hockey the past seven days. These west coast trips only get tougher as you get older, apparently. For that, I FEEL SHAME! Anywho, the Red Wings still have a game left on this road trip, but are already bringing home six points thanks to wins in St. Louis, Los Angeles, and San Jose. Call it luck, call it grit… Call it whatever you want. I think we can all agree that last year’s early-season west coast trip pales in comparison to this one.
Weekly Roundup: Red Wings Get ‘Gritty’ Win After Ugly Losses
We all knew that the Red Wings were due to be brought back down to earth after ripping off five wins in a row. That came to fruition this week, and BOY was it ugly! Detroit was coming off of two full days of rest, so perhaps that plays into this whole thing. They dropped both games on a back-to-back in Buffalo and New York.
Quick Hits: Kane Sidelined from Red Wings Road Trip
Oh hey there, friend. It’s game day for the Red Wings — the start of a quick road trip starting in Buffalo tonight. The Sabres are 2-4-0 to start their season, so maybe not much has changed there. Too early to tell. Zach Benson looks good, though! All right, so, the Wings are going to be without Patrick Kane tonight and tomorrow (oh yeah, it’s a back-to-back road trip by the way). Kane was injured (upper body) during Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Weekly Roundup: Red Wings Rip for Four Wins
Pretty damn busy week for the Detroit Red Wings. Also pretty damn successful. A couple of months ago, you may have looked at the schedule for this week and thought to yourself “that’s a brutal stretch.” Despite a handful of division opponents and a team with the two “best” players in the NHL, the Wings are on a five-game heater. The success comes off of strong efforts from goaltending, defense, and captain Dylan Larkin, who has 11 points on the season as I write this Sunday evening.
Quick Hits: Raymond and the Apple(ton) of my Eye
It’s Lightning vs. Red Wings tonight at Little Caesars Arena. The Wings come into the game with a three-game win streak. It appears that John Gibson will get a shot at redemption. Really hope the team can play like they have been the last few games. Gibson needs to get his legs under him. It’s a long season and Cam Talbot is 38 years old. For what it’s worth, Mason Appleton skated with Dylan Larkin and Emmitt Finnie at practice on Thursday.
Quick Hits: How Many Top Players do the Red Wings Have?
Red Wings Rumblings Somber yet positive. That’s my vibe today as a fan of the Detroit Red Wings. Somber because we are still waiting to learn more about Lucas Raymond’s health. He left the game Monday with an upper-body injury after taking a heavy hit right on the boards. Didn’t look great, but he was able to move his arm afterward FWIW. No practice yesterday, so we’ll find out more later today.
Quick Hits: Top Red Wings Prospects Off to a Hot Start
Red Wings Rumblings Yzerman says Red Wings’ rookie trio ‘exceeded our expectations’ this fall Here’s a nice piece from the Red Wings staff featuring Yzerman’s perspective of his homegrown talent finally making paydirt. We’re just two games into the 2025-26 NHL Regular Season, but I haven’t seen anything from Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Emmitt Finnie, or Michael Brandsegg-Nygard that I can complain about. It’s also too early to tell what the ceiling is for these three rookies.
Weekly Roundup: Red Wings Clean Up After Home Opener Snafu
The 2025-26 NHL Regular Season is well underway, and while it wasn’t exactly the start that head coach Todd McLellan wanted in his first official “home opener” since taking the job, the veteran coach is probably resting a little easier this Sunday after the Red Wings handled their business against the Toronto Maple Leafs at LCA Saturday night. Editor’s Note: I mentioned starting these “weekly roundup/recap” stories in a previous article. This is the first of what hopefully will be many.
Red Wings Activate James van Riemsdyk
The Detroit Red Wings announced Saturday morning that forward James van Riemsdyk has been activated from non-roster status. Defenseman Erik Gustafsson has been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins after clearing waivers just days ago. JvR has missed time due to personal reasons. The 36-year-old vet, signed this past offseason to a one-year deal, did not participate in training camp or preseason.
Red Wings vs Leafs Start on Monday Rescheduled
What a time to be in Toronto, eh? The NHL announced Friday that due to the MLB Postseason, Monday’s Red Wings vs Toronto Maple Leafs game at Scotiabank Arena will move from 4 PM ET to 2 PM ET. Game Two of the MLB ALCS is being hosted at Rogers Centre that same Monday. Cool thing for those of our readers attending on Monday: Following Wings vs Leafs, fans can stick around in their seats and watch Game Two of the ALCS on the big screen. Opening night did not go so well for the Red Wings.
Red Wings Start 2025-26 Season Tonight
We made it, folks. The Red Wings will get their 2025-26 campaign underway tonight at Little Caesars Arena with a divisional matchup against Montreal. There’s a lot of excitement heading into this season because the Wings are starting this 82-game journey with a jolt of young talent. Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Emmitt Finnie, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard are included on the roster, and all three are expected to make their NHL debut tonight. What a time to be alive.
Red Wings Roster Features Three Rookies
When you started to see Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Emmitt Finnie, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard’s names so late in the preseason, the writing was kind of on the wall. The talented trio are set to make their NHL debut Thursday night against the Montreal Canadiens. The news was all but sealed when the Red Wings placed defensemen Erik Gustafsson and Justin Holl on waivers. No other NHL team was interested in their services and both cleared waivers earlier today.
Red Wings Put Gustafsson, Holl on Waivers
Frank Seravalli reported a list of waiver moves across the NHL Sunday afternoon. Included in those moves were a couple by the Red Wings. The Wings are waiving defensemen Erik Gustafsson and Justin Holl.
Red Wings Inch Closer to Final Roster
These cuts are coming in quick, folks. The Red Wings announced Friday that three players have been assigned to Grand Rapids, bringing the roster down to 25. Forward Carter Mazur, defenseman William Wallinder, and goaltender Michal Postava will start the regular season in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Here is the current preseason roster as of early Friday afternoon: My eyes aren’t the best, but I see three rookies on that roster.
Quick Hits: Red Wings Roster Down to 28
Ahead of last night’s win against Toronto, the Red Wings trimmed the preseason roster to 28. So, five more men will have to go beforeThursday, October 9. Here is a look at who remains: It is entirely possible that Steve Yzerman cuts a veteran in favor of a younger player, potentially putting two rookies on the opening night roster. History tells us that won’t happen, but what’s the fun in that? I thought that Carter Mazur would be a lock for a roster spot.
Red Wings Slim Preseason Roster
The Red Wings announced some roster cuts on Wednesday ahead of Thursday’s game in Toronto. With the latest move, Detroit’s roster sits at 40. Here’s who is going and who is staying (for now)… Players Assigned or Release on Oct.
2025-26 Red Wings & NHL Predictions
With the 2025-2026 NHL Preseason now underway and the regular season approaches quickly, it’s time we all make some outlandish predictions that will no doubt come to fruition! Should I set the stage for you? Probably don’t need to, but…. the Red Wings have a lot to prove this year after a frustrating roller coaster ride of a 2024-2025 season. Steve Yzerman and his front office have created a nice cache of talented young players.
Red Wings Announce 2025-26 Preseason Broadcast Schedule
Well, well, well… It’s about that time, friends. Hard to believe that Red Wings hockey is just a matter of days from returning to the airwaves. On Friday, the team along with FanDuel Sports Network and Audacy announced the 2025-2026 preseason broadcast schedule. It all gets started this Sunday at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids for the Red & White game. That will happen at 3:00 PM ET and will be streamed on Detroit Red Wings dot com and broadcast locally in the GR market on WXSP.
Red Wings Unveil Centennial Jersey
If you’re in the market for a fresh Red Wings jersey and are willing to spend, we’ve got some good news! The Red Wings officially unveiled the new Centennial jersey for the upcoming 2025-2026 regular season on Monday. The jersey combines several aspects of jerseys from the past, reaching as far back as the Detroit Falcons and Cougars. The team showed the new kits off on social media, along with preorder links and information.
Red Wings to Retire Fedorov’s No. 91
SURPRISE! On Tuesday morning, the Detroit Red Wings announced they will officially retire Sergei Fedorov’s number 91 in a special ceremony on January 12, 2026, before Detroit’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes. 91 TO THE RAFTERS.https://t.co/EzoLOkDqWz pic.twitter.com/NOdxptplNv — Detroit Red Wings (@DetroitRedWings) August 19, 2025 This news ends a long, contentious saga amongst fans and the organization.
Red Wings Sign Defenseman Travis Hamonic to One-Year Deal
The Red Wings made a surprise late-summer signing on Friday, bringing in UFA defenseman Travis Hamonic on a one-year deal worth $1 million AAV. Most hockey fans know this guy because he’s been around the league for quite some time. Hamonic is a right-shot veteran defenseman with 900 NHL games under his belt. Hamonic, who turns 35 tomorrow, just finished a four-year stint with the Ottawa Senators. He only cracked 10 points in one of those seasons (2022-2023) where he posted 21 points in 75 games.
Red Wings Unveil Iconic “Hockeytown” Logo at Center Ice
Hey everyone! We interrupt our “summer sleep” to let you know that Hockeytown is returning to Detroit. The fans voted, and the Red Wings announced in a social media video today that the iconic “Hey Hey Hockeytown” scripture has been placed at center ice of Little Caesars Arena. Check out the video: Hockeytown has spoken.
Quick Hits: Red Wings Prospects, Schedule, Alumni News
Howdy, gang. It’s been a minute since you’ve heard from us. We’re creeping into the “no news” zone of the NHL offseason. Hell, we’re probably already there at this point. Let’s get caught up with what happened recently. The 2025-2026 NHL regular season was unveiled last week. It all gets started Thursday, October 9 at Little Caesars Arena against Montreal. It’s going to be a bit of a gauntlet for Detroit to start the season.
Quick Hits: Kasper Earns ROTY, Griffins Schedule, NHL Trades
Happy Friday, my dear friends. We’ve got a couple items to talk about before we break for the weekend. Who knows, maybe the weekend will bring some headlines for us. After a breakout season in the NHL, Marco Kasper was named the 2024-2025 Red Wings Rookie of the Year. This award is given by the Detroit sports media, which can certainly be unforgiving. It’s good to see Kasper get the recognition he deserves. What will next season bring for the young Austrian?
Quick Hits: Red Wings Coach Hirings, NHL CBA, and Tough News for MSU Hockey
Hey there, gang! Quite a bit to talk about today across the NHL and in Red Wings world. Let’s get into it. Been a tough week to be a fan of Michigan State Spartans hockey, eh? First, consensus 1st overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft Gavin McKenna committed to Penn State. The top prospect was down to Penn State and Michigan State as the final two teams.
Quick Hits: Looking Back on Red Wings Free Agency
Happy Monday, friends. We’re entering the “dead” part of the NHL offseason – Meaning there simply won’t be much news to talk about. We have a couple of items to get caught up on, so we’ll keep it brief today. Before we get into this, I know that a large portion of the fanbase is a little, well, angry to say the least. Please don’t take it out on each other. Keep our disagreements civil and the conversations constructive.
Red Wings Sign Mason Appleton to Two-Year Deal
The Red Wings have signed another guy. The team announced Wednesday evening that forward Mason Appleton has signed a two-year contract at $2.9 million AAV. Appleton has played seven seasons in the NHL — 400 games on the nose. All of them with the Winnipeg Jets. Appleton, a former MSU Spartan, scored 22 points (10-12–22) in 71 games this past season. The season before, he had a career-high 36 points (14-22–36) in all 82 games of the 2023-2024 regular season.
