What was your first job as a journalist?
I covered the sports no one else wanted to cover in that department for the Daily Egyptian newspaper at Southern Illinois University.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I'd like to be able to realize that the person pitching me actually has some familiarity with my work and what I'd prefer to cover.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My laptop and whatever I can connect to it
Who do you wish followed you?
I don't wish for anyone to follow me who doesn't feel compelled to do so.
Why did you become a journalist?
I want to understand the world around me better as well as the people in it. Being a journalist gave me a chance to actively do that.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I wrote once for my newspaper in high school. I contributed to a piece where a contingent from my school visited another school for a day.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Anything involving an anonymous country or rock musician or some other outdoorsy thing that's never been under my name.
What's your favorite drink?
Ice water, though I drink way more Pepsi than I should

What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That only a certain few are worthy of consistent access to professional sports teams. Many more are worthy than previously believed.
