press release BY HON. SPEAKER, L. JOHNSON Debate by: M. Joshua Mazibuko; IFP MPL KwaZulu-Natal Legislature; Pietermaritzburg INTRODUCTION Hon. Chairperson, Hon. Speaker and Hon. Members. I rise on behalf of the IFP to contribute to this debate, against the background of anxiety and some uncertainty which make some citizens fear for the future. The politics of anarchy coupled with sporadic protests which often turn violent hovers over our political skies like dark clouds.
Dyson sphere: What are the odds of an alien megastructure blocking light from a distant star?
Right now the star KIC 8462852 is really hot – and not just because it is a F-type star – but because the Kepler space telescope has discovered that it flickers in a highly unusual way, as if something is obscuring it. These dips in the light are different to what you would expect from planets blocking the star.
Hubble survey unlocks clues to star birth in neighboring galaxy
In a survey of NASA's Hubble Space Telescope images of 2,753 young, blue star clusters in the neighboring Andromeda galaxy (M31), astronomers have found that M31 and our own galaxy have a similar percentage of newborn stars based on mass. By nailing down what percentage of stars have a particular mass within a cluster, or the Initial Mass Function (IMF), scientists can better interpret the light from distant galaxies and understand the formation history of stars in our universe.
Hubble's Greatest Hits
|
In April 2014, Hubble data was used to weigh the largest known galaxy cluster in the distant universe—catalogued as ACT-CL J0102-4915—finding it lives up to its nickname, El Gordo (Spanish for "the fat one"). By measuring how much the cluster's gravity warps images of galaxies in the distant background, astronomers calculated El Gordo's mass to be as much as three million billion times the mass of our sun—roughly 43 percent more massive than earlier estimates.

Hubble's High-Definition Panoramic View of the Andromeda Galaxy
The largest NASA Hubble Space Telescope image ever assembled, this sweeping view of a portion of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) is the sharpest large composite image ever taken of our galactic neighbor. Though the galaxy is over 2 million light-years away, the Hubble telescope is powerful enough to resolve individual stars in a 61,000-light-year-long section of the galaxy's pancake-shaped disk. It's like photographing a beach and resolving individual grains of sand.
THE HISTORY OF STAR FORMATION IN GALAXY DISKS IN THE LOCAL VOLUME AS MEASURED BY THE ADVANCED CAMERA FOR SURVEYS NEARBY GALAXY SURVEY TREASURY
The star formation history (SFH) of the universe (ρSFR(t)) constrains models of structure formation, the assembly of galaxies, metal production, and the epoch of reionization. Currently there are testable models for the growth of structure in the universe on all scales, for the flow of gas in and out of galaxies, and the conversion of gas into stars.
