Abstract Vibronic coupling and coherence are crucial in the charge and energy transfer of photoexcited molecules. Here we investigate the coupled electron-nuclear dynamics of the photoionized benzene molecule using the time-resolved Coulomb-explosion imaging method. A long-period oscillation is experimentally observed in the ion yields of the \({{{{\rm{C}}}}}_{6}{{{{\rm{H}}}}}_{6}^{2+}\) channel, as well as the C+ + C+, and the C+ + C+ + C+ Coulomb explosion channels.

Water is a radiation protection agent for ionised pyrrole Radiation-induced damage of biological matter is an ubiquitous problem in nature. The influence of the hydration environment is widely discussed, but its exact role remains elusive. Utilising well defined solvated-molecule aggregates, we experimentally observed a hydrogen-bonded water molecule acting as a radiation protection agent for ionised pyrrole, a prototypical aromatic biomolecule.
