It's the best night of her life. It's the last night of her life. Sixteen-year-old Jenna Harbough's parents had finally given in, and there she was, at a New York club with her best friends, watching the legendary band Avenue A, carrying her demo in hopes of slipping it to the guitarist, Jake Kincade. Then, from the stage, Jake catches her eye, and smiles. It's the best night of her life. It's the last night of her life.
‘Tis The Season’: Artis-Ann's Book Round-Up Of 2023
arts Selecting my top ten of the books I’ve reviewed this year isn’t as easy as it sounds. Since I started reviewing books, for the Yorkshire Times, I’ve published over 140 reviews, including 39 just this year, so where to start? Chronologically, in rank order, or by category? I opted for categories. I’m not offering you a countdown on the lines of Top of the Pops. They’re too different but all memorable and highly readable – at least, to me.
Chemistry Is Change: Lessons In Chemistry By Bonnie Garmus
arts Review Oh wow! From page one, the main character, Elizabeth Zott, had me hooked, a protagonist of singular charm. I am no scientist, erring as I did at school, on the side of the Arts - English especially, and Languages, so the book’s title might have deterred me a little (sorry Mr Lowson, I know you tried!). But really, I should have read Bonnie Garmus’ debut novel as soon as it was recommended to me. Why did I waste precious time putting it neatly in its place on the pile?
The Three-Legged Stool: More Confessions Of A Forty-something F**k Up By Alexandra Potter
arts Have you noticed what a perfect world we live in? Well, according to social media at least, where everyone seems to enjoy the ideal existence. I’ve done it myself: posted the photo of four smiling faces with a ‘what a lovely day with besties – and so lucky with the weather.’ I didn’t post a photo from the day at Saltburn-by-Sea when the sea fret was so thick we sat at the waterfront café, muffled up to the eyebrows, looking at a grey blur because we couldn’t actually see the water.
Driftwood: Maureen Fry And the Angel Of The North By Rachel Joyce
arts Harold Fry lived in our office at school for a while and introduced himself to all of us in turn as his book was passed from eager hand to eager hand. Queenie quickly followed. I can’t remember any books being more popular but if I was still there, I think Maureen Fry would become familiar in the same way, and with the film having been released and so perfectly cast, Harold and Maureen have suddenly become real.
Friends Or Lovers: Lovelight Farms By B.K.Borison
arts Lovelight Farms could not be more different from the last book I reviewed but as they say, a change is as good as a rest. It is a romantic comedy in which best friends become so much more – eventually, when the obvious is pointed out to them! Once started, you need to read it to the end just to discover how the inevitable actually comes about. It’s a quick, easy read, harmless fun, with the occasional hot-under-the-collar moment and some laugh aloud cameos.
Case Study: Caesar - The Mirror Man By Lars Kepler
arts Set in Sweden, this Nordic Noir novel is a real page turner. It is the eighth in the Joona Linna series but the first I’ve read. Detective Joona Linna is a complex detective and I’m assuming that if I had read previous novels, I would understand him rather better but nevertheless, this is an excellent standalone novel and the essence of the man, driven by his work, is clear. It begins innocuously enough – for a murder/detective thriller – with the abduction of teenager Jenny Lind.

by Lars Kepler, Alice Menzies [Trans.] | Read by Saul Reichlin Mystery & Suspense 15.75 hrs. LAZARUS by Lars Kepler Neil Smith Trans Read by Saul Reichlin
Saul Reichlin returns to narrate the seventh book in the Joona Linna series by the Swedish writing couple known as Lars Kepler. Reichlin meets the challenge of voicing numerous characters, including a 12-year-old girl and a number of psychopaths, male and female. Warning to listeners: The plot moves from one scene of depraved, graphic violence to another. An old enemy of Detective Joona Linna seems to have risen from the dead to torture him and his crime-fighting partner, Saga Bauer.

Must-Read Nordic Noir Novels
Must-Read Nordic Noir Novels The moment a chill hits the air, nothing makes me want to curl up with crime fiction like a Nordic Noir novel. There’s something about this specific genre of crime fiction that is incredibly immersive. Nordic Noir is Scandinavian crime fiction that typically has a more police procedural plot combined with darker storylines and an incredible atmosphere.

Review: The Wrong Family by Tarryn Fisher
A true domestic suspense thriller, in every sense of the phrase, The Wrong Family takes place almost entirely inside the house where Nigel, Winnie, Sam, and Juno live. In fact, the reader may almost get the sense of a stage play unfolding, with such a small cast of characters and almost every event taking place under one roof. Fisher unfolds the story at a slow, steady pace that builds to an explosive crescendo, but along the way there are plenty of moments to get your heart racing.

Review: The Wicked Hour by Alice Blanchard
Alice Blanchard has brought readers another perfect-for-fall atmospheric thriller, continuing the series that began with Trace of Evil. I was immediately excited to be back in the world of Burning Lake, New York with Detective Natalie Lockhart.
#RivetingReviews Classic Choice: Barry Forshaw reviews UNTIL THY WRATH BE PAST by Åsa Larsson
Åsa Larsson is a markedly different writer from her fellow Swede Camilla Läckberg (discussed elsewhere on this site), with her notably cooler prose. Larsson’s 2003 novel The Savage Altar failed to make the expected impression in this country, but when Larsson was republished by MacLehose Press/Quercus (the publishers of the other Larsson, Stieg), much more attention was paid.
#RivetingReviews: Barry Forshaw reviews SISTER by Kjell Ola Dahl
The Norwegian writer Kjell Ola Dahl deserves attention – as strong novels such as The Last Fix (2000) have amply demonstrated. That book was the third Dahl novel to be translated into English (he had written eleven), and had British and American readers wondering why he was then the least known of the ocean of Scandinavian writers washing over the crime scene.
#RivetingReviews Classic Choice: Barry Forshaw reviews FACELESS KILLERS by Henning Mankell
The series of Detective Kurt Wallander books by the late Henning Mankell are notable for a variety of elements, apart from their sheer readability: their impeccable plotting and nuanced characterisation (the latter as adroit as anything in the crime-fiction genre), and their distinguished literary qualities. Like P.D. James, Mankell is frequently applauded for elevating the status of the once-disregarded crime novel into more rarefied realms.
THE RABBIT HUNTER
Saul Reichlin returns to narrate Book 6 in the Joona Linna series by the Swedish husband-and-wife writing team Lars Kepler. Through pace and tone, Reichlin masterfully maintains the tension throughout, making this the audiobook equivalent of a page-turner.
#RivetingReviews: Barry Forshaw reviews VICTIM 2117 by Jussi Adler-Olsen
Those who enjoyed the compelling and astringent Mercy will be pleased to know that we are back in the lively company of Adler-Olsen’s signature characters: his acerbic copper Carl Mørck, in police Department Q (which to the frustration of his superiors Mørck has managed to transform into a successful facility) and his eccentric Muslim colleague Assad.
#RivetingReviews: Barry Forshaw reviews LAZARUS by Lars Kepler
The once-invisible, pseudonymous couple who together comprise ‘Lars Kepler’ are no longer a mystery. After the immense success of their first book, The Hypnotist, the hidden identity of the duo led to massive press speculation and even night-time stakeouts to uncover ‘Kepler’s’ identity. Lars Kepler is a bifurcated writer, a husband and wife team, both literary authors – Alexandra and Alexander Ahndoril.

1 Late August Drizzle is falling from the dark sky. There’s no wind, and the illuminated drops form a misty dome that covers Djursholm. The city lights glow high above the rooftops. Beside the still waters of Germania Bay lies a sprawling villa. Inside, a young woman walks across the polished floor and Persian carpet as warily as an animal. Her name is Sofia Stefansson. Her anxiety makes her register tiny details about the room.
