Introduction Historical textual documentation of horsemeat consumption (hippophagy) is diffuse yet scarce across time and space in Europe, particularly in medieval Hungary. We performed quantitative analyses of horse (Equus caballus) remains among food refuse from 198 settlements in medieval Hungary to complement contemporaneous records of this practice.

1 INTRODUCTION The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx L., 1758) found at Zamárdi–Kútvölgyi-dűlő in west-central Hungary is the only complete archaeological lynx skeleton known in Europe to date. Comparable finds include a near-complete individual from medieval Vác, Hungary (Bartosiewicz, 1993), and articulated bones from the hind quarters from the ca. 40–270 CE Roman castellum of Alphen aan den Rijn, the Netherlands (Horn et al., 2021).
