Beyond the grid and the pipe: The hidden reality of electricity and water access in the Middle East and North Africa region
On paper, access to electricity and piped water in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region looks almost universal. In 2022, about 96 percent of people had access to electricity, and 95 percent to basic drinking water. But this headline story is misleading. For millions of households, these services are not reliable. Power cuts and water shortages, particularly during summer peak periods, are part of daily life—and they often hit the most vulnerable the hardest.
September 2026 Global Poverty Update from the World Bank: One in ten worldwide live in extreme poverty
More than 824 million people, about one in ten worldwide, were living in extreme poverty in 2024. The World Bank updated these global and regional poverty estimates in September 2026, on the Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP). Barriers to AI in healthcare In our experience, there are three major barriers that prevent AI from reaching its full potential in the healthcare sector. The first is that most healthcare practitioners are not well versed in the ins and outs of technology and data management. There is a significant need for education around what technology is used for. Their expertise and focus is rightfully centred on the patients in front of them.
Making data count to devise better policies to fight poverty in MENA
As we marked World Poverty Day on October 17th, a blog published recently by World Bank staff highlights that poverty has finally receded to pre-COVID pandemic levels, which in essence means we have lost three years in the global fight against poverty. The recent World Bank blog is based on a meticulous analysis of survey data in the World Bank’s Poverty and Inequality Platform (PIP).
