Holding by Laura Joyce-Hubbard
Author’s Note The language of flight is filled with poetry and metaphoric potential. I use my experiences in flight as a pilot to better understand nonflying subjects. “Holding” is one of a series of creative nonfiction essays borne from flight maneuvers—in this case, the “holding pattern.” I found inspiration from the technical aspects of holding and used them as a starting point to help me explore parallel themes in my nonflying life: relationships, risk, habitual patterns, and secret-keeping.
Collateral by Laura Joyce-Hubbard
We handed ourselves over as collateral, like priests handing over wafers. This is the body of [state your name]. This is the blood of [state your name]. We pledged an Oath, gave our rights away with right hands raised, repeating after me. We solemnly Swore. Took the obligation freely. I [we stated our full names]. Stripped of all we knew: first our hair. “Look down,” so we did. The red barber chair, the white cape—clasped too tightly at the neck. When I looked up, they took my name.
Issue Forty-Six: Laura Joyce-Hubbard
Back to Issue Forty-Six BY LAURA JOYCE-HUBBARD The archery range south of the marina butts up against Lake Michigan on the Naval Station. We like to think of it as ours. Only twice have we seen anyone. Once, a petty officer on a smoke break. Once, new enlistees with six packs. I bring my son to teach him breath, aim point, to hold the bow in tension. He climbs the wooden stanchion, to the shooting stand. I hand him the hickory bow.
