High tunnels (polytunnels, hoop houses) are a rudimentary form of protected culture that allows for season extension but can also increase stress from abiotic conditions if they are not carefully managed. To better understand how high tunnels buffer outside conditions, we conducted an extensive on-farm study of abiotic conditions in 36 high tunnels located in Indiana, Illinois and New Hampshire.
The GLP Needs Your Help It is easier than ever for advocacy groups to spread disinformation on pressing science issues, such as the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. No, vaccines are not harmful. Yes, the use of biotechnology, GMOs or gene editing to develop antigens for treatments including vaccines are part of the solution. To inform the public about what’s really going on, we present the facts and challenge those who don't. We can’t do this work without your help.
Significance Environmental damage from insecticide overuse is a major concern, particularly for conservation of “good” insects such as pollinators that ensure stable production of food crops like fruits and vegetables. However, insecticides are also necessary for farmers to manage “bad” insects (i.e., pests), and thus, a more holistic view of crop management needs to account for the proper balance between the beneficial and detrimental aspects of pesticides.
