2025 Family & Home Prize THIRD PLACE WINNER: "한 han" By Laura Kim
By Laura Kim | March 4, 2026 Frontier Poetry is excited to congratulate Sean Hill’s pick for the THIRD PLACE winner of the 2025 Family & Home Prize: “한 han“ by Laura Kim. Kim’s poem renders loneliness as absence—as rituals of longing, like the lighting of matches; as a taste—red wine; as a silent night sky; as a flooded rice field.

Greta Gerwig's Barbie is as fun and white as Ryan Gosling's bleached hair
WARNING: Spoilers and references to homophobia “Like hold on, let me go find me a pen” – Ice Spice, “Barbie World” Since the beginning of time, Barbie’s fingers were always yummy. Yummy in a plastic way, like the way cheap, sticky lip- gloss is. Barbie is always being consumed: visually, physically, and economically. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023) follows the doll’s tradition and satisfies its hunger by encouraging consumption in its marketing campaign and big box office success.
Opinion: As a deaf person traveling on 9/11, I was the last to know what was going on
Kim is a deaf education teacher at San Diego Unified School District and lives in Scripps Ranch. As a deaf person traveling on 9/11, my experience was one that I will never forget as I felt like I was the last to know what was going on. During emergencies and times of crisis, the deaf are often forgotten when it comes to communications, causing additional confusion and trauma. This fateful day was no exception.

An excerpt from 'The Case for Impeachment'
Impeachment will “proceed from the misconduct of public men, or, in other words, from the abuse or violation of some public trust,” and “they relate chiefly to injuries done immediately to the society itself.” —Alexander Hamilton, The Federalist, 1788 I began thinking about impeachment before the November 2016 election. For weeks, my students had been asking who I thought would be our next president, Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.
An excerpt from 'Make Your Own Bed'
An excerpt from ‘Make Your Own Bed’ by Adm. William H. McRaven The barracks at basic SEAL training is a nondescript three?story building located on the beach at Coronado, California, just one hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean. There is no air?conditioning in the building, and at night, with the windows open, you can hear the tide roll in and the surf pounding against the sand. Rooms in the barracks are spartan.
Joe: Trump’s dangerous lie about Russia
Comrade Putin dreams of rebuilding the U.S.S.R. one invasion at a time. As he wraps himself in that delusion, someone in the West Wing should remind the president just how inhumane life was in the old Soviet Union. … Since seizing control, Putin has carried forward the worst of the Soviet’s legacy: His political opponents have been poisoned, investigative reporters have been killed and Russia has invaded neighboring countries.
Joe: Trump’s reckless shot at a federal judge
When a president tweets insults at a Hollywood star, the dignity of his office is tarnished. When a commander in chief uses Twitter to attack a loyal military ally, America’s friends across the globe become unsettled. But when a president uses social media to question the legitimacy of a federal judge following an inconvenient (and temporary) outcome, that is simply unacceptable.
Joe: The media’s hypocrisy and hyperventilating in the age of Trump
This past week, I met twice with President-elect Donald Trump attempting to secure an interview for inauguration week. … I do not know whether we will end up with an interview with the incoming president next month, but I do know that the reaction from some media reporters has been an equal dose of hyperventilation and hypocrisy that such a meeting ever took place. … Nobody seemed to care that Mika and I met privately with Barack Obama for over an hour in the White House.
Joe: Trump’s victory was history rhyming with itself again
Less than two years after Obama’s inauguration, the tea party was swept into power. Voters even checked the president’s 2012 reelection win a few years later with the largest congressional majority for Republicans since 1928. With such jagged voting patterns, Americans proved themselves worthy of F.
2016 presidential candidates visit 'Morning Joe' in 2015
Presidential candidates from both sides of the aisle got up before dawn to talk to Joe and Mika. It didn’t matter if it was way too early, if it meant that they’d have a chance to make their pitch for the White House before the Morning Joe gang. Almost every candidate stopped by, so that they could promote, define, or clarify their positions. Here’s a look back at our 2016 visitors in 2015.
