Start-ups must stare into boardroom battle
Ten long years of retrofitting corporate cultures, changing policies and working hard to build more diverse candidate pools has brought us to the point where women make up almost a third of S&P/ASX 200 company boards. According to the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ recent data, women represent 29.7 per cent of S&P/ASX 200 boards, up from a low 8.9 per cent in 2009, and a new stretch target of 40 per cent over three years suggests ongoing growth is desired.
The Rise of Media-First Investors (now with added diversity)
On the weekend, a friend retweeted the below. As a journalism and creative writing major who has effectively written myself into the venture and tech industry in Australia, I am extremely bullish on the future of creators driving investment decisions. I love the work of the people mentioned - Packy McCormack and Turner Novak in particular. The topic of this thread, and the ensuing blog post it linked to excites me greatly.
How open banking is helping fintechs thrive
The fintech ecosystem is booming and is showing no signs of slowing down. Research from KPMG showed that, despite being in the middle of a pandemic, there has been an increase in the number of fintechs active in Australia, with 733 FinTechs recorded. Investment in Australia’s FinTech sector has also soared, with US$1.4 billion invested in 2020, the second highest total on record.
It all feels like failure
Every now and then, I am sent (send myself?) into an existential spiral, reminiscing about former iterations of Lauren and the places and situations she found herself in, but with the perspective of someone who has been through so much more since. In retrospect, it’s much easier to see the defining moments and pivotal opportunities for what they were, and to feel a delayed sense of gratification in knowing you were actually on the ‘right’ track.
Ambiguity and Uncertanty
This week on Meta, Lauren Capelin takes us on a journey through a creative career, much of which was spent sitting in the ambiguous space. Lauren is a Principal at Startmate. You can find her on Linkedin, Twitter and Substack. This is a guest essay - we’re experimenting with some different ideas and types of content. Let us know if you want to read more short essays like this one.
Moving the needle on diversity in the startup sector is a work in progress: here's how Statemate is tackling it
Startmate Principal Lauren Capelin kicks off what will become a series of reflections on how her organisaiton can collectively move the needle on diversity. At midnight last night, we officially closed applications for our Summer21 cohort — the first fully-remote, location-agnostic cohort we are running across Australia and New Zealand, which will kick off in January 2021.
Covid-19 has given us wicked problems to solve
Back in April, US venture capital veteran Marc Andreessen published a call-to-arms to the US economy titled ‘It’s Time to Build’. As the country watched the pandemic spiral out of control, Andreessen lamented the fact it was ill-equipped to respond, ultimately lacking the capacity to build the infrastructure and equipment required. America needed to re-learn how to build. Across Australia and New Zealand, we have comparatively fared so much better than many countries.
Pioneering CAAMA's key role in raising Indigenous voices
The remote, one-street town of Elliott, which lies in the desert on the Stuart Highway halfway between Alice Springs and Darwin, recently played host to a seemingly small yet historically remarkable project. With many traditional Aboriginal languages under threat of disappearing as Elders pass away, Karl Hampton explains three residents of the sparsely populated town are the last remaining speakers of the local language, and his media organisation is playing a powerful role in keeping it alive.
