On a couple of recent flights, gate agents informed us the flights were full and asked for volunteers to check their bags at the gate free of charge. On one flight, the gate agent went further, warning that if no one volunteered, everyone would be required to check their bags at the gate. However, when I boarded the plane, I found plenty of empty overhead cabin bins that ultimately went unused. So why were passengers given information that appeared inaccurate?

The breeze whipped my face as I pedaled out of Koblenz, Germany. As we made our way along a dirt path shrouded with trees, the Rhine River came into view. The weather fluctuated from drizzle to sunshine as we cycled past cargo ships to our left and residential areas and gardens to our right. I initially hesitated to sign up for this 15.5-mile bike ride, but it turned out to be one of the highlights of the new river cruise experience from Trafalgar.
