When Your Friend Loses a Spouse
The phone rang at 7 a.m. on the dot, not a normal time for a call in many households. Having grown up in a medical household, we are all used to the phone ringing at odd hours. My sister answered, then gasped and then started to cry. We found out that a friend who had surgery for cancer five days before had passed away suddenly overnight, just shy of his 51st birthday. His widow was like a big sister to me growing up. She was a few years ahead of me on the sports teams, always kind and supportive.
Raising Money-Smart Kids Safeguards Parents’ Retirement
Photo by unsplash/@daiga_ellaby Lauren Gadkowski Lindsay During my 24 years as a financial planner, I have seen parents make choices that compromise their retirement or future financial goals. While it is challenging to tell clients how to parent, I believe that as advisors it is our job to advise in matters of money, since we have so much insight in to the relationship between money and family dynamics.
Teaching Resilience Won’t Make You Popular - Initially
Photo by unsplash/@debsworld Inflation has been a big headline lately, but not for the first time for clients and advisors who have been around for several decades. Those of us who lived through the 1970s remember high gas prices and double-digit mortgage interest rates. What I have found with my retired clients is that long before the Covid-era, they could adjust their spending as needed, usually in part to having to do without at some point in their lives.
Reduce Anxiety for Clients and Their Heirs
Photo by unsplash/@polarmermaid Lauren Gadkowski Lindsay Many people don’t share enough information with their executors or named trustees. The appointed individuals, usually family members, experience time-draining stress as they have to scurry around, while they are grieving themselves, trying to find documents to satisfy banks and brokerages so appropriate transfers of assets can be made to beneficiaries.
Maintaining A Career, But Working Less, Is the New Goal
Photo by unsplash/@gregrakozy Lauren Gadkowski Lindsay Early on in my career, over two decades ago, I met with a client who hated his job so much that he was willing to do anything. I suggested getting away from his current workplace. Like many employees of his generation, he had a pension that required a certain amount of service, and he was struggling to stay there long enough to receive it. He had even developed physical ailments due to the stress of his job.
COVID-19 Has Brought the Mortality Conversation Front and Center
Photo by unsplash/@anniepratt Lauren Gadkowski Lindsay We have all watched the markets during COVID and seen how some businesses have thrived during the pandemic and others have struggled. In my industry, I have observed CPAs crazed with demands as they keep up with tax updates and ever-changing extensions. However, the real boon has been to estate planning attorneys, who are more in demand than they have ever been during my career tenure.
Working on wellness: A shot of prevention
Posted on November 19, 2018 in Perspectives By USM Free Press By: Lauren Lindsay & Lisa Belanger, USM Alumna & Director of Health Services While at school, students come into close contact with one another. We have all seen someone sneezing or heard someone coughing and might not have thought anything of it. Yet, sometimes a sneeze is more than a sneeze and a cough is much more than just a cough. Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is a good example of this type of masquerading illness.
It’s tough, but do your heirs this one favor
Death is a hard topic to broach. People don’t like to acknowledge that it’s going to happen, so funeral planning may not be something to which they give a lot of thought, if any. But communicating your funeral wishes in writing is one of the best gifts you can give your survivors. I like to provide a funeral-planning work sheet to my clients.

6 Dirty Little Secrets of Recruitment
The world of agency recruitment is a strange one. Recruiting employees on behalf of a company is an exciting process to be part of, but in this intermediary position, you often get exposed to the dirty little secrets companies strive to conceal. There are many unethical practices still embedded in recruiting and hiring today, and I’d like to shed some light on some of the main issues below: You name it, recruiters have come across it.
Are Long Employee Tenures Always a Good Thing?
Long, steady employment with a single company is commonly regarded as a good thing. These employees have been there, done it all, and know their jobs inside out. Companies where long histories of service tend to be the norm often promote this fact as a selling point. If staff members are staying put, surely they must be happy and engaged in their roles! But could it be that long-serving staff members are detrimental to a company’s evolution? Can “happy and engaged” employees actually be going stale?
Everything that's right with temporary work
Temporary work is rarely people’s first choice. It can be hard going into a new company and not knowing what you will face and how long you’re expected to be there for. But temping comes with many benefits that are often overlooked, and if used in the right way, it can greatly enhance your skillset and career prospects. I’ve supplied temporary staff to a multitude of companies around Glasgow for the last 3 years and have outlined some of the unique advantages this type of work has to offer.
