Bacteriophage therapy needs more understanding of the susceptibility of virulent bacterial strains, their genetic traits involved in pathogenicity and phage-bacterium co-evolution Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically target bacteria and, therefore, can be used to kill bacteria without harming animal cells. As such, they represent an attractive alternative to antibiotics in treating bacterial infections in both humans and animals.
