Faculty Speech Must Have Limits
After this historic year of endless controversy, I — like many faculty members — look forward to calmer times on campus. But before any semblance of normalcy can be achieved, we must come together to resolve two lingering questions about our role in the University community.
Why Harvard Faculty Should Reject a Faculty Senate
For many of us faculty members, these past few months have culminated in a series of superlative highs, wrought with a flurry of seemingly endless lows.
Crime Waves and Moral Panics
Organized retail theft, train robberies, and murders! According to news headlines, a crime wave is sweeping the US. Yet as JSTOR Daily has reported before, sometimes crime waves are little more than moral panics. Other times, media coverage does reflect actual increases in crime. In the absence of personal familiarity with the "Other," stereotypes often take hold.
The GOP and the Politics of Fear and Loathing
Everywhere I turn, I find friends and acquaintances who are not merely concerned, but frightened. A kind of raw ugliness to our national politics, not really seen in the post-World War II era, seems to be in fashion. Nothing has brought this home more forcefully than the success of Donald Trump in recent Republican presidential primaries.
Sanders Beats Clinton 49-49: The Real Story Behind the Iowa Numbers
In 1968 the Harvard Crimson ran the poignant headline “Harvard Beats Yale 29-29!” Yale and Harvard were undefeated going into their matchup that year, with Yale a heavy favorite. As expected, Yale got out to an early 22-point lead. But in the last few minutes, Harvard scored 16 unanswered points and bested (tied) the prohibitive favorite. The event and the pithy headline are indelibly etched in history. Much like football, politics is a tough business.
