Can political discourse heal divisive arguments over Guilford Schools?
I would like to further Kendall Svengalis’ discussion about divisiveness over public education in Guilford (Connecticut Mirror, Viewpoints, June 17, 2022). I believe the discussion has implications beyond Guilford for political discourse in Connecticut. Despite his attack on the board of education and Paul Freeman, superintendent of schools, Svengalis and I share some common ground. I appreciate his discussion of “Group Think.” We should emerge from our echo-chambers to understand opposing views.
The historical basis of zoning begs for reform
Desegregate CT Click on the image to explore the interactive zoning atlas. Discussions of race are fraught with emotion. Witness the zoning reforms being discussed in our legislature. I will attempt to advance a dispassionate argument that is based on government-sponsored racism that occurred during my lifetime and led to the structural problems that persist today. The following history is not discussed in our schools, which leads to many misconceptions among the public.

To sustain our good fortune, we need to remain vigilant lest we become like countries around the world that had to reclose their societies. I am sure we are up to the task, but there is confusion about the need for masks when outdoors. Many, including some legislators, believe masks are only required for indoor venues.

Evaluating claims about tolls in Connecticut
Budget debates are in full swing in Connecticut. Recently Mark Conrad (CT Mirror, Feb. 15, 2019) presented interesting data to support the idea that Connecticut should cut waste from the Transportation budget rather than institute tolls. He observed that Connecticut administrative costs per mile of road are ten times the national average, and total expenses per mile were three times the national average. This made Connecticut’s the sixth most expensive state highway system in the nation.
