What is already known about this subject? N2O causes functional inactivation of hydroxocobalamin by oxidizing the cobalt ion. Chronic N2O use can cause severe, potentially irreversible complications, including subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord, peripheral neuropathy, cognitive deficits, and psychosis. Cobalamin and holotranscobalamin levels reflect vitamin B12 status and may help identify pre-existing B12 deficiency, which can increase the risk of N2O-induced toxicity.
