Local opinion: Reliable, affordable energy Is the foundation for Arizona prosperity
The following is the opinion and analysis of the writer: A family in Tucson. Farmers and ranchers in Eastern Arizona. Small businesses in Prescott. An advanced manufacturing facility in Phoenix. What they all have in common is a need for reliable, affordable energy. This simple objective guides everything we do as members of the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC).
Biomass burning a key component to wildfire mitigation
Recently, I had the opportunity to tour and learn more about the work of our regulated utilities in fire prevention in Northern Arizona. Experts are warning us that fire risk is elevated this summer due to the prolonged hot weather and drought in the western region. Fire prevention and vegetation management programs by our utilities are crucial to Arizonans to reduce the negative effects of fire on lives, structures and our environment.
Commissioner Márquez Peterson Reminds Ratepayers of the Utility Disconnection Ban
As Arizona experiences a 10-day forecast of severe heat warnings, Corporation Commissioner Lea Márquez Peterson urges Arizonans to remember that regulated electric utilities are forbidden from disconnecting customers due to late payment, non-payment, or accumulated debt during extreme weather conditions. Currently, regulated utilities like Arizona Public Service Company, Tucson Electric Power Company, and UNS Electric, Inc.
New EPA Proposal is a Threat to Arizona’s Growth
There is a lot to be encouraged by in the latest Arizona economic outlook report from the University of Arizona. Our state continues to post strong job numbers and wage gains, and Arizona is still slated to outpace the nation in economic growth. However, the same report shows we are bearing the brunt of crippling inflation and soaring housing prices. Unfortunately, it seems that regulators in Washington, D.C., are bent on making these problems even worse.
Letter: EPA proposal on small particulates
There is a lot to be encouraged by in the latest Arizona economic outlook report from the University of Arizona. Our state is slated to outpace the nation in economic growth, however, the same report shows we are bearing the brunt of crippling inflation. Unfortunately, it seems that regulators in Washington, D.C., are bent on making these problems even worse. The EPA recently proposed a rule that would significantly tighten the limits for small particulates (PM2.5).

Corp. Commissioner Peterson: Is Arizona at risk for rolling blackouts? The following column is the opinion and analysis of the writer. Opinion: Arizona Corporation Commission approves funding for local economic development
At the end of October, my fellow Arizona Corporation Commissioners and I offered support for economic development in Graham County by authorizing Graham County Electric Cooperative (GCEC) to leverage the Rural Economic Development Loan & Grant Program established by the USDA. The program allows local utilities to establish revolving loan funds and then offer zero-interest loans to local businesses that meet certain criteria and is already making an impact in the county.
Midterm Election Poll: Arizona’s 2nd District, Marquez Peterson vs. Kirkpatrick
There’s a big question on top of the standard margin of error in a poll: Who is going to vote? It’s a particularly challenging question this year, since special elections have shown Democrats voting in large numbers. To estimate the likely electorate, we combine what people say about how likely they are to vote with information about how often they have voted in the past. In previous races, this approach has been more accurate than simply taking people at their word.
Chamber Chatter: Promoting business in the region
Earlier this month, I spent the day in Cochise County, Douglas and Sierra Vista to be exact. The City of Douglas hosted Gov. Ducey for a luncheon and tour of the Port of Entry. The event was monumental for the mayor and the community, and many remarked it was the first time in many years that a sitting governor had spent so much time in the region. During his remarks, the governor spoke about the importance of the Raul H.
DREAMers and Dollars
The DACA dilemma is challenging … for the more than 800,000 children and families in the nation who are experiencing anguish over immigration status uncertainty as well as for the employers who have hired DACA recipients. The President’s elimination of the DACA program earlier this month impacts close to 40,000 young people in Arizona today. Prior to the president’s action, we heard emotional appeals by the young people and watched rallies occur across the country.

Hispanic Business owners primed for future success
A recently released Hispanic small business owner report, the Bank of America 2017 Hispanic Small Business Spotlight, showed that Hispanic small business owners are confident about their growth prospects and anticipate that revenue will increase more than 70 percent in 2017. Driven by the positive outlook, 76 percent of Hispanic small business owners plan to grow their business over the next five years, as compared to 55 percent of non-Hispanics owned businesses.
Chamber Chatter: Arizona’s new paid sick leave
July 1 is just over a week away, and small business owners need to get prepared for Arizona’s new paid sick leave requirements. When Arizona voters approved Proposition 206 in November the minimum wage was increased to $10 an hour, but few realized that the more alarming increase in our wage expense was the addition of a mandated paid sick leave.
Lea Marquez Peterson: Protecting my online privacy
As I read the alarmist articles about losing my online privacy because of a new law passed by Congress, I ask myself what are the facts that support them? Unfortunately, they are a blatant mischaracterization.
Lea Márquez Peterson: Arizona’s business voice in times of change
I was asked recently about my opinion on the temperature of our business community following the election. I responded with a mixed message - optimism related to perceptions of how the Trump administration may make it easier to do business in the U.S and trepidation based on his campaign rhetoric related to Hispanics, Mexico and women. As a Hispanic woman who works closely with allies in Mexico, it is difficult to remain unaffected.
Leaders attend National Hispanic Chamber Legislative Summit
Recently, Cecilia Mata, owner of AllSource Global Management and the Chair of the Sierra Vista Hispanic Chamber and its affiliate chambers, and I attended the United States Hispanic Chamber Legislative Summit. The summit highlights the accomplishments and remarkable growth of Hispanic-owned businesses across the United States. The agenda features key political leaders from both parties who speak about economic issues to the attendees.
Talk promising, but solutions needed
Last week, we participated in a second visit to Nogales by the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation). The first visit stemmed from a letter we sent requesting that the chairman of the FDIC visit the border and hear directly from the business community about banking challenges they were facing. The chairman responded quickly and sent Regional Director Stan Ivey and his team to Nogales in March to speak to the Ambos Nogales Hispanic Chamber and other business leaders.
Expanding 'A' schools throughout Tucson
Everyone in Tucson wants the best for our kids, which includes access to great schools, the best teachers in their fields, high standards and high expectations. That is why the Tucson Hispanic Chamber has taken such an active role and partnership with the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the A for Arizona initiative, which is focused on ensuring that more of Arizona’s kids have better access to high quality public schools.
