Vita Activa & the Digital Security Helpline join forces to support mental health and digital safety for activists
A digital attack is never just a technical incident. It often comes with psychological distress, leads to burnout, and opens up new threats to physical safety that require expert support. At the same time, individuals coping with harassment or online violence often need more than mental health support; they need immediate technical assistance to secure their digital presence and stay safe.
How U.S. funding cuts expose civil society to digital attacks
Amid a global decline in democracy and congruent rise in autocratic regimes, activists, journalists, and human rights defenders are facing mounting threats to their work defending human rights and freedoms. Now they’ve been dealt a further blow by the Trump administration’s recent actions to halt funding for foreign aid and digital rights initiatives, which will leave civil society increasingly under-resourced and exposed to digital attacks.
Visualizing the Digital Security Helpline’s recent impact
Civil society is at the forefront of efforts to keep the internet free and safe, from uplifting dissenting voices, to demanding accountability from those in positions of power. But around the world, these same individuals and groups are surveilled, silenced, and persecuted through the misuse of technology. Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline works to support civil society members at risk, so they can safely and securely continue their work to uphold democracy and human rights.
