Is there a role for leadership in flat organisations?

Is there a role for leadership in flat organisations?

City A.M. — Time-sensitive and strategic decisions are best left in expert hands. For some time now, companies like Google and online retailer Zappos have championed flat organisational structures - where authority is widely distributed, everyone works together in a large space, and employees are encouraged to collaborate. This has certainly transformed leadership and management styles, but it doesn't mean that strong-minded managers have become extinct. Lego, for example, has reduced the number of middle managers and empowered its employees to take on more responsibilities, but it has also expanded its top management by bringing in functional specialists and moving senior managers much closer to operations.

Chinese equities - a steady bull market?

Chinese equities - a steady bull market?

City A.M. — Despite a six per cent sell-off on Thursday, the Chinese equity markets made fresh gains yesterday. Shanghai's CSI 300 index rose 4.86 per cent to 5,076.18, while the Shanghai Composite Index gained 4.72 per cent to 4,828.74, following a 136.9 per cent increase in the last 12 months. These gains came despite relatively weak market data. The official manufacturing PMI edged up to 50.2 from 50.1 in April (indicating expansion), but a survey by HSBC and Markit Economics - which focuses on small and mid-sized firms - stayed in contraction for a third month at 49.2, despite beating the 49.1 figure from April.

Looking for a career change? Try an EMBA

City A.M. — An executive MBA can be a demanding experience. Typically taking one or two years, often costing eyewatering sums of money, and offered as full or part-time courses by business schools, these degrees are seen as a vital platform for experienced professionals to make the leap into more senior positions. But they may also be useful for those looking to change career altogether. They offer "a life-long network of colleagues who might help you to make the jump to a new sector or even to start out on your own," says Nicola Simpson, programme director at the London Business School.

Are emerging markets in for a bumpy ride?

Are emerging markets in for a bumpy ride?

City A.M. — Developing economies are better prepared to withstand higher US interest rates. A slowdown in global trade and investment growth, as well as a fall in commodity prices are dominating the outlook for emerging economies. Major central banks - notably China, India, Indonesia and Turkey - have focused on cutting interest rates to shore up their economies as global growth slows. But as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) prepares to raise short-term interest rates by the end of the year, this divergence could create opportunities as well as risks for investors. The Fed is laying the groundwork for its first interest rate rise in nearly a decade.

What can misfit entrepreneurs teach business?

What can misfit entrepreneurs teach business?

City A.M. — The underground economy is a hotbed of creativity and innovation It is not often the case that chief executives and managers turn to pirates, hackers or highly disruptive entrepreneurs for advice. But as business writers Alexa Clay and Kyra Phillips suggest, that's exactly what they should be doing. Indeed, leaders trying to boost innovation and creativity inside their firms can turn to the misfit economy for inspiration. Here are some of their insights. One of the ways that we can learn from misfits is the way that they rethink business models and allow workplace cultures to evolve.
