Rules of the Game with Lee Grace: Football changed a lot with 40-second clock
A few years ago, NCAA and Texas high school football introduced the 40-second play clock. This change was made to help standardize the time between the end of a play and the start of the next play. Only for certain administrative situations will the play clock be set to 25 seconds. New exceptions this season for are after kickoffs and after touchdowns, when the play clock is set to 40 seconds and starts immediately when the ball is declared dead. Here are situations to test your rules knowledge.

Here are some play situations concerning the running game to test your rules knowledge. Play One — On first and 10 from its own 35-yard line, the offense lines up with two backs behind the quarterback and a wingback just behind and to the outside of the tight end. While the pro football preseason shows some confusion about tackling with the helmet, the major rule change affecting high school and college football this season concerns blocking below the waist. Here are a few play situations to test your knowledge concerning blocking below the waist. Play One: Snapping the football from the 50-yard line, the quarterback drops back to pass. One of the duties of the officials at a game is to keep order and allow the game to be played in a safe manner with good sportsmanship among the participants.
The ‘Call’ in Dallas-Detroit Game
As a sports official I have been repeatedly asked about “THE CALL” in the Dallas-Detroit playoff game. While not talking about whether the call (or non-call) was correct, let me explain the “mechanics” used by the officials. The play in question was a pass where the receiver was covered by a Dallas linebacker who trailed the receiver and threw his hands up to distract the receiver. The pass hit the linebacker in the back between the numbers. The linebacker did not turn his head to look for the pass.
