New REI Concept Takes Experience To New Heights
REI, the outdoor-themed co-op, has opened a new concept that’s less about where members “live, work and shop” and more about where they “get outside and play.” The store at the Settlers Green outlet shopping center in North Conway, NH is described as “a gateway to outdoor adventures in the White Mountains,” which cover part of the northern Appalachian Mountains and about a quarter of the state of New Hampshire. This is REI’s first New Hampshire store, and the location is consequential.

Walmart's Facial Recognition Tech Would Overstep Boundaries
A Walmart patent application filed in 2012 describes a system that would use facial recognition technology at the checkout to help store personnel determine if customers are unhappy and, if so, make contact to address any shopping-related problems. Mention of the technology was included in a Wall Street Journal article on the increased use of automation to replace or augment human activities in stores.
Experts See A Brighter Future For Malls, Minus Department Stores
According to research from JLL Retail, many malls are finding few challenges replacing department stores as anchors. What’s more, the new tenants generally pay much higher rent. The shopping center owner noted that, historically, rents paid by department stores have been “extremely low,” usually less than $10 per square foot. In the case of Seritage Growth Properties, Sears was leasing 266 properties, paying on average about $4.40-per-square-foot.
Here's What The J.C. Penney/Sephora Partnership Should Focus On
Store-within-a-store concepts are not uncommon today, but few can claim to have achieved the success of Sephora’s presence at J.C. Penney. The concept, which debuted in 2006, has grown steadily over the years, and last week the two retailers announced that 70 new shops would be opened inside Penney locations this year while 32 others would be expanded. By the end of 2017, there will be nearly 650 Sephora inside J.C. Penney shops in operation.
Retailers Can No Longer Bank On Black Friday
