Discussion The results of this study reflect the history and current state of tomato breeding in Kazakhstan. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the development of vegetable breeding and seed production has remained stagnant in independent Kazakhstan due to a shortage of funding and highly qualified experts (Amirov, 2012). The results of the present study have revealed a low genetic diversity of local tomato varieties and their similarity to foreign cultivars.
