1 Introduction Large wildfires frequently occur in the western United States and southern Canada and are expected to become even more frequent and intense due to climate change (Schoennagel et al. 2017; Shrestha et al. 2022). The 2023 Canadian fire season was record-breaking, with over 18 million hectares of land burnt, more than seven times the historic national annual average (Jain et al. 2024; Taylor and MacLean 2024).

Abstract Extreme cold fronts are closely associated with the spread of large wildfires in Australia. The strength of a front is determined by the drop in temperature across it, which will in turn be determined by the warm and cold temperature anomalies on either side of the front.
