Pace management
Leif Abraham · Follow 3 min read · -- The following post was published internally to the Public team by Leif & Jannick in November 2022. As managers, DRIs, PMs, and engineering leads, we put a lot of thought into how we execute work, but historically, we haven’t had a clear approach to managing the pace of that work. Let’s be honest: Most deadlines have been famously flexible in this company… (to be clear: that’s bad).
Incentives are the crack cocaine of marketing.
Incentives are like crack cocaine. When you use them it feels good. You see quick results, the chart goes up. But one day you look into the mirror and realize that you look like shit. In the short-term incentives can juice your numbers but in the long-term erode the substance of your business. Customers acquired with incentives are often the worst cohorts you can acquire. They have high churn, low LTV, and for some reason also seem to be the ones who need your CX team the most.

Otis joins Public to empower fractional investing in NFTs, art, and collectibles
We believe a modern, diversified portfolio is made up of more than just stocks, funds, and crypto — it’s also made of cultural assets. Today, we’re excited to announce the acquisition of Otis, a pioneer in fractional investing in NFTs, art, and collectibles. With Otis joining Public, the Public platform will soon be the only place in the world where people can invest in — and build a modern portfolio with — any fractional asset.
We raised $65M to change the culture of the stock market
Fifteen months ago, we launched Public.com to reinvent how people experience and invest in the stock market. We pioneered real-time fractional investing, as well as a true social network built upon a stock brokerage. The ability to buy any stock with any amount of money and, in the same place, discuss investments with a diverse community has been core to the growth we’ve captured so far. Today, we’re excited to announce our Series C financing of $65M.
To democratize the stock market, we have to change its culture.
In recent months, a surge of new and young investors have entered the market through modern investing platforms. This boom sparked a conversation about the degree to which novice investors should have access to the stock market. Should investing really be that easy? And are intuitive experiences leading new investors down a dangerous path? I believe getting more people and more young adults invested in the stock market is important.

Messaging, designed for investors
Conversations about investing are already occurring between investors, often within traditional text or chat apps. This means being one step removed from getting more information or taking action. We want to make it easier for people to have productive discussions about investing, and so today, we’ve announced Messages. Messages makes it possible to have conversations about investing in the context of where you actually invest.
We raised $15MM to grow our broad community of investors
The American stock market has consistently been the biggest driving force for prosperity in human history, with returns of about 10 percent annually on average. That’s great news for some people but doesn’t mean much for the millions of people — including the 51% of U.S. millennials — who are stuck on the sidelines due to economic and psychological barriers to entry.
What it really means to be a “mission-driven” company | Product Hunt
"Simply having a mission statement is not what will make a mission-driven company." Being mission-driven is a fluffy concept. Many companies state they are, few people actually believe it’s true and for most it’s not clear what it really means. So what does it mean to be “mission-driven”? Simply having a mission statement is not what will make a mission-driven company. Even Enron had a mission statement, but that doesn’t mean they were mission-driven.

Spike And Die: Why Products Created By Ad Agencies Fail
By Leif Abrahamlong Read The following is an excerpt from Madison Valley: Building Digital Products. Getting the Most out of Talent. And How Madison Avenue Can Be More like Silicon Valley. The book is about a topic we spend a bit of time discussing on this site: if, and how, marketing companies can adopt the behaviors of tech companies. According to the author: “Every agency wants to build a lab and make products. Every award show adds product innovation categories.
Introducing My Desk: A Task Manager for Freelancers
We know you’ve got a lot on your plate, which is why we’re excited to roll out our next iteration of My Desk, a new feature from AND CO designed to help you organize all of the tasks you’ll inevitably need to keep track of as a business of one. An introduction to My Desk – AND CO from AND CO on Vimeo. My Desk isn’t just another to-do list. (You’ve got plenty of those, and face it—they can eat up more time than they save).
Study: Freelancers say they’re happier since going independent
Much has been written about the gig economy and the state of freelancing. You’ve likely heard the incredible stat that 40 percent of the workforce will be independent by 2020. You might have also heard the frustrating finding that most freelancers have had trouble getting paid by a client at least once in their career. These types of findings are helpful to me and my team since our product is designed empower the growing independent workforce.
Client Didn’t Pay? We'll Send a Demand Letter on Your Behalf
The Freelancers Union has found that 71 percent of independent workers have had trouble getting paid by a client. (!!!!!!!!!) The reasons behind this can be complex and varied, but some common threads exist. For one, freelancers have a tendency to start off partnerships on shaky ground due to incomplete or shoddy contracts (that’s why we made this free tool). Secondly, some companies pay late (or not at all) simply because they think they can get away with it. That’s where we come in.
Meet The New Breed of the Gig Economy: The Slash Worker
Meet The New Breed of the Gig Economy: The Slash Worker Like many other articles, this article starts with the mind boggling estimate the Freelancers Union released that 40% of US workers will do freelance work by 2020. How people work is changing and there are many factors that play into the why, but if we look at how careers have developed over the years, we see that the current trend is just a natural evolution.
The Evolution of Careers
When we started building AND CO to solve our own problems of having to manage our admin work, I was realizing that I did not really identify myself with the term “freelancer.” Yes, technically I was earning my money mostly through 1099 jobs, but that was pretty much it. So when I wasn’t “freelance” and I didn’t have a traditional full-time job, what was I? Where did this identity crisis come from? Freelance work is on the rise, no doubt about it.
Expense-Tracking You Wanna Make Babies With: AND CO's Latest Update
Is this a stupid cover image? Of course. It’s completely ridiculous. You know what’s not stupid? AND CO‘s new and improved expense tracking! Big news: We’ve put our heads together to completely reimagine expense tracking on the web app. Our mission: Make it super easy to track and manage expenses that don’t come from your bank account—because if you use the app, you know that the ones that do come from a synced account port into our system automatically. Like magic.
