EPA says lead scavenger in airplane fuel poses health risk

The US Environmental Protection Agency released its draft risk evaluation of ethylene dibromide on Wednesday. The agency preliminarily concluded that the compound, used to scavenge lead in a type of airplane fuel, poses an unreasonable health risk to people who work with it. The most common use of ethylene dibromide in the US is as an additive to a leaded aviation fuel called avgas. The brominated compound reacts with lead oxides and sulfides created during combustion.

Can the gutted US climate research program rise again?

Companies withhold info more often for dangerous chemicals, C&EN finds

Sourcing the data To analyze how companies use confidential business information (CBI) claims in chemical reporting, C&EN turned to Chemical Data Reporting (CDR) data under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). C&EN downloaded CDR reports from 2016, 2020, and 2024. Companies file the reports every year, but the US Environmental Protection Agency releases the reports only every 4 years. For example, the 2024 report contains chemical reporting data for 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.
