Challenge Cup teams: Changes for Connacht and Ulster
Connacht boss Pete Wilkins has made four changes to his side to take on Benetton in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals on Sunday (12.30pm). Three of the four are due to injuries from the last-16 win in Pau last weekend. Andrew Smith comes in on the wing instead of Shayne Bolton, while JJ Hanrahan will start at out-half to replace Jack Carty, who misses out with a hamstring strain. Caolin Blade will captain the side from scrum-half.
Saturday's card at Limerick rained off
Following a sustained period of heavy rainfall, Saturday's fixture at Limerick has been cancelled. Paul Moloney, clerk of the course at the venue said: "The extremely heavy volumes of rain recently has totalled 68mm of rainfall in the last fortnight alone, including heavy rain during racing yesterday. "Due to logistical reasons we have had to cancel the Flat fixture scheduled to take place on 20 April and Limerick will consult with Horse Racing Ireland on replacing that fixture in due course.
Connors starts for Leinster against La Rochelle
Leinster have made two changes to their team for Saturday's Investec Champions Cup clash against La Rochelle with Will Connors and Jason Jenkins coming into the side. Josh van der Flier and Ross Molony drop to the bench for tomorrow's quarter-final at the Aviva Stadium (5.30pm, live on RTÉ), a repeat of the last two finals, which La Rochelle won.
Ireland captain O'Mahony signs new Munster contract
Ireland captain Peter O'Mahony has signed a new one-year contract with the province, the IRFU and Munster have confirmed. The 34-year-old stepped down from his role as Munster captain in November and there had been speculation about his future with his current contract set to expire at the end of this season.
Woods clears Masters hurdle ahead of ultimate test
Tiger Woods had played just 24 holes this year coming into the opening round of the Masters and the 15-time major winner will put his battered body to the ultimate test on Friday when he will have to play nearly as many holes in a single day. Looking to make a Masters record 24th consecutive cut, Woods got his quest off to a solid if unspectacular start on Thursday, scrapping his way to one-under par through 13 holes before play was halted due to darkness.
Paul Flynn's football championship predictions
We probably got a bit more excitement than we thought last weekend, with wins for Waterford and Wicklow. Wicklow are now rewarded with a challenge against Kildare this weekend; it will be a tough task for them. Kildare had a training camp down in Fota Island last week and they're hoping that will press reset for them. For me the games of the weekend are Dublin taking on Meath in Croke Park and Armagh and Fermanagh up in Ulster.
Donal Lenihan's Leinster v La Rochelle preview
La Rochelle based themsleves in Cork all week having flown in from Cape Town. The weather has been so bad, the pitches that Ronan O'Gara had arranged to train on weren't fit for purpose, so he me rang late on Monday in a bit of a panic - could I sort out Temple Hill in Cork Con for him?
Pool win gives Leinster belief v La Rochelle
Leinster may have seen their Champions Cup hopes ended by La Rochelle in each of the last three seasons, but December's pool stage win over the defending champions has given them belief that they can be beaten. Leo Cullen's side travelled to La Rochelle in the opening round of the pool stage four months ago, and prevailed 16-9 in yet another thriller. It broke their losing streak against the French side, who have been their arch-nemesis in their quest for a fifth Champions Cup title.
We must call time on pyro party for good of the league
The League of Ireland, with its sellout crowds and unparalleled atmosphere on this island, has always been about community and footballing spirit. My love for the league was enhanced by the electrifying atmosphere that pyrotechnics create at games. The smoky air filled with your team's colours amplified the excitement at the time and still evokes some of the fondest memories from my playing days.
Ireland 'taking lumps out of each other' in training
Dorothy Wall believes there's no comparison between this Ireland team and the one which fell to a heavy defeat to Wales in last year's Guinness Women's Six Nations. Ireland welcome the Welsh to Cork on Saturday for their third game of this year's championship, with Scott Bemand's side still looing for their first win of 2024.
Shebourne aim to maintain lead at top
The second series of matches in the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division matches begin tonight, with league leaders Shelbourne hosting Bohemians in a Dublin derby in front of the RTÉ cameras. It was a chaotic first quarter with two managers losing their jobs, including Stephen O’Donnell this week, and Shels rocketing to the summit. Derry City and St Patrick’s Athletic have had rocky spells, while champions Shamrock Rovers sit nine points off the lead with a game in hand.
'I'm not out of it'
Rory McIlroy had mixed emotions after carding a one-under-par 71 on a windswept opening day of the 88th Masters. McIlroy, carded four birdies and three bogeys in his lowest opening round since 2018, but ended the day five shots behind playing partner Scottie Scheffler and six adrift of clubhouse leader Bryson DeChambeau.
DeChambeau leads but relentless Scheffler on his tail
Bryson DeChambeau beat his personal par by two shots as a relentless Scottie Scheffler made an ominous start to his bid for a second Masters title. Almost three and a half years after claiming that Augusta National was a "par 67 for me" due to his prodigious hitting, DeChambeau carded a seven-under-par 65 on a windswept opening day which followed a lengthy weather delay.
Klopp brands Atalanta defeat a 'low point' in season
Jurgen Klopp called Thursday's 3-0 home defeat to Atalanta a "low point" in Liverpool's season as their Europa League hopes were left hanging by a thread. Liverpool looked flat throughout the quarter-final first leg and ended the night perhaps fortunate Atalanta had not taken one of the many late chances they had to add to a lead given to them by Gianluca Scamacca's brace and a late Mario Pasalic goal.
Villa take slender lead to Lille in Conference League
Aston Villa beat Lille 2-1 in the first leg of their Europa Conference League quarter-final at Villa Park. Goals in either half from Ollie Watkins and John McGinn saw Villa lead their first European last-eight tie since 1998 and give boss Unai Emery victory in his 1,000th match as a manager. Bafode Diakite's late header gave Lille a lifeline just as it looked like they would head home frustrated by Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, who had made a string of big saves.
Leverkusen strike late to take control against Hammers
West Ham were breached by two late goals as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Bayer Leverkusen. The Hammers had defended heroically for 83 minutes before goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was finally beaten by substitute Jonas Hoffman. A one-goal deficit might have given David Moyes' side hope going into next week's second leg at the London Stadium, despite facing a side unbeaten all season.
Atalanta ransack Anfield to leave Liverpool in trouble
Lacklustre Liverpool were stunned 3-0 by Atalanta in a Europa League quarter-final collapse that could prove to be Jurgen Klopp's last European night at Anfield. This competition offers the chance to bring the curtain down on his German's reign with a European trophy on May 22, but their hopes of making the Dublin showpiece are in jeopardy.
Varane out for 'few weeks' with muscle injury
Manchester United's absentee-hit defence will be without Raphael Varane for the next few weeks due to a muscle injury. A disappointing second season for the Red Devils under Erik ten Hag has been punctuated by a variety of fitness issues, with the backline hit particularly hard. United have been without an out-and-out left-back for much of the season due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, while their problems at centre-back are now stacking up.
Alonso staying with Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso will remain with Aston Martin beyond this season after signing a new 'multi-year' deal with the British-based Formula One team. Double world champion Alonso, who will be 43 in July, had been linked with Mercedes and Red Bull – as possible replacements for Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen respectively. But Aston Martin announced on Thursday that Alonso, whose current deal had been due to expire at the end of the year, has agreed a contract extension.
Second Bellewstown meeting off due to bad weather
The fixture scheduled to take place at Bellewstown on Sunday has been cancelled. Lorcan Wyer, IHRB clerk of the course at Bellewstown said: "Unfortunately, following some further rain since entries on Tuesday and no significant improvement in ground conditions at Bellewstown, we have made the decision to cancel the fixture scheduled to take place on Sunday. "It's disappointing but the team at Bellewstown are liaising with Horse Racing Ireland regarding the rescheduling of this meeting.
Impaire Et Passe claims controversial Aintree Hurdle
Impaire Et Passe had to survive a lengthy stewards' inquiry before being declared the winner of the William Hill Aintree Hurdle. Willie Mullins’ evens favourite rounded the final bend on the bridle but did not run straight to the line as both Langer Dan and Bob Olinger threw down their challenges in what was a thrilling finish to the Grade One contest.
Points deduction 'mess' confuses Nuno and Dyche
Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has described the current points deductions under the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR) as a "mess". Forest – who are 17th in the table – were given a four-point sanction for breaching PSR last month and are awaiting the results of an appeal. Fellow strugglers Everton have also been deducted points this season and were handed a 10-point penalty imposed last November, which was cut down to six points on appeal.
