‘TSUNAMI-LIKE’ FLOOD: A “devastating…glacial flood” on the Nepal-China border in late August has now killed more than 1,000 people, with thousands more missing,reported Le Monde. A “tsunami-like wall of water” swept away “entire villages”, said the Singapore-based broadcaster Channel News Asia. The latest reported death toll in Tibet stands at 21 dead and 541 missing, said state news agency Xinhua. Chinese president Xi Jinping urged “all-out efforts” for search and rescue, reported Bloomberg.

FOSSIL FUELS: China has published a five-year plan for oil and gas development, which targets a “broad expansion of domestic production, pipeline infrastructure and storage capacity”, reported financial news outlet Caixin. The plan hones in on two priorities, it added: energy security and peaking oil consumption in tandem with the “gradual integration of lower-carbon alternatives”.
