Why You Should Know Francis Grimké
Law and Gospel Francis Grimké, born enslaved on a plantation in South Carolina in 1850, was one of the most remarkable pastor-theologians of American history. He ministered from 1878–1928, mainly in the nation’s capital, and his story is worth knowing.
The Devil’s Doctrine
Let us attend to the doctrine inculcated by this preacher, “Ye shall not surely die.” Bold assertion, without a single argument to support it! The death contained in the threatening was doubtless eternal death, as nothing but this would express God’s feelings toward sin or render an infinite atonement necessary. To suppose it to be spiritual death is to blend crime and punishment together.
The Devil’s Doctrine: A Sermon from Lemuel Haynes Against Universal Salvation
Preface from Lemuel Haynes There is no greater folly than for men to express anger and resentment because their religious sentiments are attacked. If their characters are impeached by their own creed, they only are to blame. All that the antagonists can say cannot make falsehood truth, nor truth, falsehood. The following discourse was delivered at Rutland, Vermont in June of 1805, immediately after hearing Mr. Ballou, a universal preacher, zealously exhibit his sentiments.
When the Church Got Slavery Wrong
A Sad Chapter in History This is one of the saddest chapters in American history. You can look at the history of the ancient church—as Kyle Harper has in a couple of important books that he has published—and see how Christianity, the effects and consequences of Christianity, played a part in the waning and the dissolution of slavery in the old Roman Empire.
Did Anything Happen in 1776 besides That One Thing?
Ten Key Events Whenever I tell my American friends that my new book is about 1776 and the way it created the post-Christian West, their initial reaction is invariably one of surprise. Why is an English pastor writing a book about the American Revolution? And how could the War of Independence possibly be blamed for post-Christianity?
An Antislavery Message from 1776 by the Nation’s First Black Ordained Minister
The following is an excerpt from “Liberty Further Extended,” a manuscript that Lemuel Haynes penned in 1776 which attacked the slave trade and upheld the liberty that is equally precious to each and every person. The essay is included in its entirety in Selected Sermons, part of the Crossway Short Classics series. Liberty as a Jewel As tyranny had its origin from the infernal regions, so it is the duty and honor of every son of freedom to repel her first motions.

Lemuel Haynes: The Most Important American Figure That You’ve Never Heard Of
An Unquestionable Legacy Lemuel Haynes is perhaps the single most important American figure most Christians have never heard of. Born July 18th in 1753 to a Black man and a White woman, Haynes was abandoned by his parents in the home of a family friend who sold the infant Haynes into indentured servitude.
